Clear plastic sheet replaces woven fabric, usually PVC or a polyethylene film, and that swap changes the behavior in three ways. Transparency lets you see traffic through the canopy, which is why these get recommended for children walking to school. The deep curve presents a sloped face to horizontal wind, so gusts push the dome onto your head rather than lifting it from beneath. Plastic sheet also stays waterproof indefinitely, because there is no weave to wick and no repellent finish to wear off. Frames stay simple, eight ribs on a solid shaft being typical, since the shape does most of the wind work.

A Stick Umbrella shares the shaft and the single hinge per rib but keeps a shallow canopy that leaves your face exposed to driving rain.
