Evening Wrap

Bare shoulders are the problem this solves. A wrap is a wide rectangle, roughly 20 to 28 inches deep and 70 to 80 inches long, carried across the back with the ends resting over the forearms.

Everything about the construction fights bulk. Chiffon, georgette, fine cashmere and beaded net are chosen because they cover without adding thickness under a strapless or sleeveless dress. There is no clasp, no button and no loop anywhere on the piece. That means it stays on by friction and by how you hold your arms, and it slides the moment you reach for something. A little weight in the hem, from beading, fringe or a rolled edge, is what keeps it from traveling off your shoulders.

Weight is where a blanket scarf goes the other way, giving the same coverage in wool that stays put, at a bulk no evening dress can carry. A square scarf is too small to reach shoulder to shoulder. An oblong scarf at 12 inches wide covers the neck and leaves the upper arms bare, which defeats the purpose. Choose this only when the look matters as much as the warmth, because on warmth alone every sibling beats it.

Weddings, theaters and over-cooled restaurants are its natural home. Formal dresses stay visible underneath, which no other piece here manages. If you need your hands free, though, look elsewhere, since a wrap wants adjusting every few minutes. Outdoors in wind, it is useless.

Drape it over your shoulders in the store and walk a few steps. If it slips before you reach the mirror, it will slip all night. Cashmere and silk blends grip skin better than pure polyester chiffon does. Store it rolled rather than folded, because fold lines show badly in sheer fabric and beading catches on itself. Have beaded pieces cleaned professionally, as agitation in water loosens the threads holding each bead.
