Newsboy Cap (Hats)

A newsboy cap gathers eight triangular panels of cloth up into a covered button at the center of the crown. That gathering is what gives the cap its rounded, slightly poofed shape, sitting well above the head rather than close against it.

Wool tweed and wool blends are the classic cloth, cut generously so the extra fabric has somewhere to go once it is gathered at the button, and a stiff peak is sewn on at the front the same way it is on a flat cap. Corduroy and cotton versions turn up for warmer weather, trading some structure for a softer drape. Inside, a thin lining lets the cap slide on without catching hair, and some versions button the peak flat against the crown.

A flat cap is the nearest relative and the one people mix it up with most, but a flat cap uses only one or two panels and almost no gathering, so it sits low and close where a newsboy cap stands up and rounds out. A baseball cap also has a stiff peak, though its curved panels are sewn for height at the back rather than fullness all over, and it adjusts at the back where most newsboy caps do not. A beret gets its shape from felting instead of panels, with no peak and no seams at all.

A long or narrow face gains width and softness from the extra volume up top, and the rounder silhouette suits a full head of hair better than a low, close cap does. A small head should look at a flat cap instead, since that much fabric gathered into one button can overwhelm a small frame and leave the cap sliding low without a snug lining. Bulk is the honest weakness: all that gathered cloth packs down worse than a flat cap and loses its round shape if it is stuffed flat into a bag.

Measure your head a finger's width above the ears the same way you would for any hat, and buy to that number in inches or centimeters, since a lining that is too loose lets the cap slide down over your eyes. Brush wool or wool blend versions to lift dust, spot clean stains rather than soaking the whole cap, and store it stuffed loosely with tissue so the gathered crown keeps its round shape.
