Waist Belt

Once a strap passes about two inches it stops fitting through loops, and that is where waist belts begin. Widths run from two to four inches. The belt goes on the outside of a dress, coat or knit to mark the narrowest part of your torso.

Your body between rib and hip is a cone, not a cylinder. So a straight cut wide belt gapes at the top edge and digs in at the bottom. Good ones answer this in one of two ways. Either the panel is cut with a curve so the top edge is shorter than the bottom, or the belt is elastic and stretches unevenly to follow the taper. Inside sits a layer of interlining, the stiff hidden fabric between outer and lining. That is what stops the belt folding over on itself when you sit down.

A standard belt does a job. This one does a shape, which is a different purpose entirely. Against a corset belt the gap is compression: a corset belt carries vertical bones and laces down to a smaller measurement. A waist belt only marks the waist you already have. A chain belt hangs loose on the hip and travels as you walk, where this grips and stays. And unlike a skinny belt, it changes the proportion of an outfit by splitting your height at the point you choose.

Over a shift dress, a wrap coat or an oversized sweater it stops the outfit reading as one long column. Long-waisted people can carry the full four inches. Stay near two inches if you are short in the body, or the belt swallows the space between ribs and hips. Hot weather works against it, since a wide band over layers traps heat at your middle and there is no way to vent it.

Stretch an elastic belt to its limit and release. It should snap back with no wave left in the edge, because once elastic relaxes it never returns. On a leather one, the top edge should be bound or turned rather than raw cut, as a raw edge across a wide panel curls first. Store it rolled loosely or laid flat, never folded, since a crease across a wide panel is permanent.
