Weight is the honest weakness, since shell, fill, and tread add up, and a boot built for a mountain drags on a child who mostly crosses a parking lot. Indoor hours belong to a different pair, which is why schools in snowy regions expect a change of shoes at the door.

Road salt eats leather and stitching, so wipe slush off the same evening and pull any removable liner to dry overnight. Waterproof claims deserve a skeptical read on cheap pairs, because a treated fabric and a sealed seam are different promises, and only the second survives a puddle. Stored folded, the shaft, the sleeve of the boot above the foot, takes a crease that cracks by the second winter; stored upright, the same boot often outlasts the size.
