Closure Type

Hook-and-Loop

Presses two fabric strips together for a closure that opens and adjusts in one motion.

Also called: velcro, touch fastener, fastening strap

The basics

What to know about hook-and-loop

One strip carries tiny hooks, the other a fuzzy field of loops; pressed together they grip, peeled apart they release. Adjustment is continuous rather than stepped, since any overlap along the strap is a valid setting, so the closure tunes finer than a buckle and faster than laces. Children's shoes, adaptive footwear and post-surgical shoes are built around it.

One-motion operation is the point. Arthritis, limited grip strength, a cast, or one-handed dressing all make laces and small buckles a genuine barrier. A strap that opens with a peel removes it. Feet that swell through the day gain just as much, because the strap re-tensions in a second to the afternoon foot without removing the shoe. Orthotic wearers can fold the shoe wide open for insertion, which laces allow only slowly.

Grip fades as lint packs into the loop side, and a strap that once held firm starts creeping open under load. Cleaning the loops with a stiff brush or a pin restores most of the hold. Washing shoes with the strips pressed closed prevents most of the packing. The hooks themselves wear smooth after years and cannot be revived, which sets this closure's working life below a buckle's or a zip's.

Best for

When it works well

  • Children who cannot yet tie laces, because independence arrives years earlier.
  • Limited hand strength or dexterity, since one peel replaces knots and small hardware.
  • Feet that swell during the day: the strap re-tensions in seconds without taking the shoe off.
  • Orthotic users, as the shoe opens wide enough to seat an insert properly.
