Hybrid Console

Docks to the television and lifts out as a handheld, giving up power in both roles.

Also called: dockable console, convertible console

The basics

What to know about Hybrid Console

One chip serves two jobs in a hybrid console. Slotted into its dock it sends a picture to the television; lifted out it becomes a handheld with a screen of roughly 7 to 8 inches and detachable or built-in controls. The processor normally runs at a lower clock speed on battery than in the dock. This is how the machine protects a runtime of about 2 to 6 hours depending on the title. In your hands it lands at 400 to 550 g once the controllers are attached, noticeably more than a phone and less than a handheld gaming PC.

Set beside a Home Console, it loses on every performance number, and that machine never leaves the room. Lighter, cheaper and longer lasting, a Handheld Console will not put anything on a television at all. Look at a Handheld Gaming PC and you gain far more graphics power and an open storefront, paid for in battery life, weight and time spent in settings. The hybrid trades peak capability for the fact that one purchase covers both the sofa and the train.

Households running one television, families who pass the machine between people, and anyone who plays in short stretches away from the living room get the most from this shape. Travel suits it too, since the dock is small and a game suspends instantly. Look elsewhere if you want the best-looking version of games released across several platforms, or if the television is a high brightness 4K set you bought specifically to be fed 120 frames. Docked output on these machines often tops out at 1080p rather than 4K.

Test the handheld screen first, because that is where most hours happen. Check brightness for outdoor use, and whether the panel is LCD or OLED, since the second gives deeper black in a dark train carriage. Confirm which storage card standard it takes, as newer models can require microSD Express rather than an ordinary card. Detachable controllers are the usual failure point, so ask about stick drift coverage and whether replacements are sold separately. Verify the dock is included, and that the kickstand holds an angle on a wobbly tray table.

Screen protection earns its cost here more than on any other console, because the panel travels beside keys. Wipe the dock's inner contacts occasionally, since grit dragged in on the machine is what scratches the screen edge over months. Keep the battery between about 20 and 80 percent when the system offers a charge limit, and never leave it in a hot car. Store detachable controllers attached or in their case so the rails stay clean.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • One-television households where the console has to leave the room regularly.
  • Families who hand the same machine between several people and rooms.
  • Travel and commuting where instant suspend beats raw graphics power.
  • Local multiplayer away from a screen, using detachable controllers as two pads.

Style comparison

Hybrid Console vs similar video game consoles

  • Digital-Only Console

Drops the disc drive to cut the price, and ties every game you buy to one account.

  • Handheld Console

Seals a screen, controls and battery into one unit tuned around a fixed game library.

  • Home Console

Sits under the television on mains power and spends its whole budget on picture and frame rate.
