Anything over 16 inches across sits in the travel and overnight range, holding roughly 25 to 40 liters. Two days of clothes, a pair of shoes, a beach towel and a wash bag go in together. A folded bath towel alone claims about 4 liters of that. Weekend bags, beach totes and large shoppers all live in this band.

Airline rules bite here. A personal item is often capped near 18 by 14 by 8 inches. So a rigid extra large tote can cross the limit while a soft weekender of the same volume squeezes under it. Measure the bag packed rather than flat, since a soft bag gains two or three inches of depth once it is full.

Loaded weight is the real ceiling, not volume. Past about 8 kg a single shoulder strap turns painful inside fifteen minutes whatever the padding. Look for twin handles with at least 9 inches of drop to clear a winter coat. Add a wide detachable strap for the long stretches. A reinforced base panel matters more at this size than any other, because the whole load presses through the bottom seam every time you set the bag down. Unstructured bags also let contents settle into a lump at one end, so a zipped divider or internal compression straps keep the shape usable.
