Women's Tunic (Tops & Blouses)

Long enough to cover the seat, a tunic uses side splits to clear the hips.

Also called: long top, tunic top

The basics

What to know about Women's Tunic (Tops & Blouses)

Length is the entire definition of a tunic. It runs long enough to cover the seat, usually landing between the top of the thigh and mid-thigh, with splits up the side seams so it passes over the hips without pulling. Too short to work as a dress, too long to tuck into anything, it occupies the gap between the two.

Those side splits do real work. Rising four to eight inches from the hem, they release fabric exactly where the hip is widest. This lets a straight-cut tunic stay narrow through the body and still move. Weight and drape settle the rest: a crisp cotton poplin stands away from the body and hides what is underneath. Rayon or soft jersey follows your outline and has to be cut roomier to compensate.

A t-shirt covers the waistband and stops; a tunic keeps going. Push the hem down to the knee and you have crossed into t-shirt dress territory, where the garment stands alone and needs nothing under it. Unlike a shirt dress, a tunic was never meant to be worn bare. The coverage it gives is only as good as whatever you put beneath it.

Leggings and slim jeans are the standard partners, since a narrow leg stops the proportion going shapeless. Buyers who want their seat and hips covered without committing to a dress get precisely that, and cotton or linen versions handle heat well. Petite and short-waisted buyers should be careful, because a hem at mid-thigh cuts the leg line at its least flattering point.

Stand sideways at a mirror and see whether the split begins above or below the widest part of your hip, since below is useless. Feel for a lining or a denser weave if you plan to wear it over leggings, as thin fabric over stretch fabric shows every seam beneath. Press the split edges first when ironing, because that is where fraying and curling start.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Leggings gain a top that covers what leggings do not.
  • Linen versions stay off the skin in hot, humid weather.
  • Anyone who dislikes fitted waistbands gets coverage without wearing a dress.
  • One long top spans casual travel days and quiet dinners.

Style comparison

Women's Tunic (Tops & Blouses) vs similar tops & blouses

  • Bodysuit

Snaps between the legs stop a fitted top from ever riding out of your waistband.

  • Wrap Top

Crossed front panels tie at the waist, so you set how deep the neckline sits.

  • T-Shirt

Short set-in sleeves and a ribbed neck band that springs back define the t-shirt.
