Women's Camisole (Tops & Blouses)

A camisole descends from underwear and still shows it: minimal seaming, a body that skims instead of grips, straps under half an inch wide, and a finish smooth enough to vanish beneath another layer. The neckline is straight or a shallow V, and there are no sleeves at all.

Good ones are cut on the bias, meaning the pattern pieces are laid at a 45 degree angle across the weave. This lets a woven fabric give a little in every direction and fall without pulling. Straps run through metal or plastic sliders. You set the neckline depth yourself, and that adjustment is the most useful feature on the garment. Silk and viscose satin drape and breathe; polyester satin looks identical on a screen and turns hot and static-prone against skin.

Strap width is the fastest way to separate a camisole from a tank top. A tank is knitted rather than woven, uses a strap broad enough to hide a bra, and is finished to be seen on its own. A slip dress is this same garment continued to dress length. A bodysuit fixes the untucking problem with snaps, whereas a camisole fixes nothing and simply stays thin. That thinness is exactly why it slides under a blazer without adding bulk.

Layering is the real job: under sheer shirts, inside open cardigans, beneath a suit jacket in a cold office. Humid climates reward a silk one, since the fiber moves moisture off the skin. Pass on it if you want your shoulders covered, and know that a standard bra will show unless you pick a wide-strap cut or one with a built-in shelf.

Hold it up to a window before deciding, because pale colors go translucent under overhead lighting. French seams or a narrow rolled edge signal care, while an overlocked raw edge frays and prints through thin fabric. Wash silk cool by hand and hang it damp; a machine dryer takes the shine out in one cycle.
