Women's Halter Top

A halter top ties behind the neck instead of over the shoulder, leaving both shoulders and your back bare.

Also called: halter neck top, tie-neck top

The basics

What to know about Women's Halter Top

Skip the shoulder strap entirely, and a halter top is what remains: one strap runs behind your neck instead, and nothing crosses either shoulder. That single change leaves both shoulders bare and exposes your entire back, since no strap or seam interrupts the line on either side.

Bra options are the real limit on a halter top, not style or fabric. An ordinary bra strap crosses the shoulder and would show at the exact place the neckline leaves bare, so it will not work underneath. A halter-style bra, tied behind the neck the same way the top is, solves that but still leaves the back exposed above the band. Adhesive cups or going without support are the only other routes, and both suit a smaller bust far better than a larger one.

A tank top solves the coverage problem a halter creates, since its straps sit over the shoulder and hide a normal bra strap completely. A camisole does the same with even thinner straps, built to layer rather than to bare the back. Choosing a halter top means giving up that coverage on purpose, trading it for a neckline and an open back that neither the tank nor the camisole offers.

A halter top suits warm weather, evening occasions and anyone comfortable with a bare back, and it works best on a smaller bust that does not need much support from the strap. A larger bust asks a lot of one strap at the back of the neck, and support suffers for it. Skip the style for a full day of activity or any setting where a bare back is out of place, since no version of a halter top reads as covered up.

The honest weakness is neck strain: every ounce of fabric, and the weight of the bust itself in a halter-style bra, pulls down on the tie at the back of your neck instead of spreading across both shoulders the way a normal strap does. A heavier fabric or a larger bust makes that pull worse over a long day. Look for a wide tie or a padded strap at the neck, since a thin cord digs in fastest. Adjust the tie to set the neckline depth yourself before you decide on a size, and wash the fabric the same way you would any woven or knit top of the same cloth.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Warm weather and evening occasions suit a halter top better than an office or an active day.
  • A smaller bust gets full use of the style without asking too much of one strap.
  • Backless dresses and open-back tops pair naturally with a halter, since neither needs shoulder coverage.
  • Anyone comfortable going without a normal bra underneath has the most styles to choose from.

Style comparison

Women's Halter Top vs similar tops & blouses

  • Peplum Top

A peplum top fits close through the body, then flares from a seam at the waist out over the hip.

  • Off-Shoulder Top

An off-shoulder top sits below both shoulders on elastic or a structured band, with no strap at all.

  • Crop Top

A crop top is defined by length alone: the hem ends at or above your natural waist, whatever sits above it.
