What relative humidity means
Relative humidity is the share of water vapor air holds against the most it could hold at that temperature. It is the one number both of these machines exist to move. A humidifier adds water to indoor air. A dehumidifier takes it back out. Health and building guidance lands on the same band almost everywhere: hold your home between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity, read with a hygrometer, a small meter that costs about 15 dollars, and you sidestep trouble at both ends. Below 30 percent, nasal passages dry and crack, static shocks start, and wood floors and furniture shrink until gaps open at the joints. Above 50 percent, dust mites breed instead of drying out, and once a cold surface such as a window reveal or the corner of an outside wall sits near saturation, mold takes hold on it within a few days.
Why it is seasonal
Temperature explains the seasons. Outdoor air at 20 degrees Fahrenheit and 70 percent relative humidity carries very little actual water, so when your furnace warms it to 70 degrees the holding capacity multiplies while the water does not, and the reading collapses toward 10 percent. Winter dryness comes from heating, not from weather. Summer runs the reverse: warm outdoor air walks in carrying real moisture, meets a basement wall at 62 degrees, and drops it as liquid. Humidifiers answer with four mechanisms. A wick soaks water into a paper or aluminum pad and a fan evaporates it off. A piezoelectric disc, a ceramic that flexes when voltage crosses it, vibrates near 1.7 million times a second and throws water off as visible fog. A heating element boils water into steam. A furnace mounted unit performs the wick trick inside your ductwork for every room at once. Dehumidifiers use two. Refrigerant models chill a coil below the dew point, the temperature at which air must give up moisture as liquid, so water condenses there and drips into a bucket. Desiccant models pull air through a wheel of moisture absorbing material, then heat the wheel to drive that water back off to a drain.
Reading the output label
Output wears a different label on each side, and one of those labels changed meaning recently. Humidifiers are rated in gallons per day: about 1 to 2 for a bedside tank, 3 to 9 for a console, 12 to 20 for a furnace mounted unit. Dehumidifiers are rated in pints per 24 hours, and in 2019 the United States test condition fell from 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 65. This is far closer to a real basement. Identical hardware lost roughly a quarter of its printed capacity that year, so the machine once sold as 70 pints now sells as 50. Size a humidifier by the room: 1 to 2 gallons per day serves a bedroom up to 400 square feet, 3 to 6 covers an open floor of 1,000 to 1,500. Size a dehumidifier by dampness as well as area. Begin at 10 to 12 pints for 500 square feet of moderately damp space, add about 4 pints for each additional 500, then add 4 to 8 more if you can see damp patches or smell earth. This puts a musty 1,200 square foot basement near 20 to 25 pints.
Running one is expensive
Every choice bills you somewhere. Running a dehumidifier is one of the more expensive things you can plug in: a 50 pint refrigerant unit draws 500 to 700 watts, and twelve hours a day for a summer month is about 200 kilowatt hours, near 30 dollars at 15 cents a unit. Warm mist humidifiers cost you the same way, near 300 watts against 30 for a cool mist unit. Ultrasonic silence gets paid for in white mineral dust and jugs of distilled water. Evaporative safety gets paid for in fan noise and a wick you replace every 1 to 3 months. Buckets are the quiet drawback on portable dehumidifiers, since a 50 pint machine at full output fills a 12 pint bucket four times a day. So continuous drainage is a requirement in a wet basement rather than an upgrade.
Five things to judge
Judge these machines on five things. A built in humidistat, a control that reads humidity and shuts the machine off at a set point, does what a timer and a speed dial cannot. On any dehumidifier, find the lowest stated operating temperature and whether defrost is automatic, since a refrigerant coil below 60 degrees ices over and stops collecting. Standing water grows things
Skipping maintenance here does more than cost you output. Standing water at room temperature grows bacteria and mold within 24 to 48 hours. Empty, rinse and dry the tank daily. Disinfect it weekly and rinse until nothing smells. Buy a hygrometer before you buy either machine. Put it at seating height on an inside wall, away from vents, windows and doorways, then read it morning and night for three days. Under 30 percent calls for humidification, over 55 percent calls for the opposite, and between those two figures you need neither.
Size a humidifier by air volume rather than floor area. A 400 square foot room with 12 foot ceilings holds as much air as a 600 square foot room with 8 foot ceilings, so measure height as well, then match it: 1 to 2 gallons per day for a bedroom, 3 to 9 for an open floor.
A dehumidifier starts at 10 to 12 pints per 500 square feet of moderately damp space, gains 4 pints for each extra 500, and gains 4 to 8 more for visible damp or standing water. Confirm the figure is a post 2019 rating measured at 65 degrees Fahrenheit, since older numbers ran about a quarter higher for the same machine.
Leave 6 to 12 inches of clear air at the intake and the exhaust of a portable dehumidifier. Pushed into a corner it reprocesses its own dry exhaust, and the bucket then fills far more slowly than the rating suggests.
Plan the drain before you buy. A gravity hose needs the drain port sitting above the floor drain with at least a quarter inch of fall per foot and no dip for water to sit in. Where the only drain is higher than the machine, choose a model with an internal pump, which usually lifts about 15 feet.

Disinfect weekly with half a cup of white vinegar, or with one teaspoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water left for 20 minutes, then rinse the tank and base until no smell remains. Never mix the two chemicals.
Descale every month using white vinegar. Mineral crust blocks heat on a boiling element and damps the vibration of an ultrasonic disc. Output falls by half while current draw stays identical and you conclude the machine wore out.
Replace the wick in an evaporative unit every 1 to 3 months, and the water panel in a furnace humidifier every autumn before the heating season, since a stiffened yellow pad evaporates a fraction of what it did new.
