What to know about refrigerators

Nothing inside makes cold

A refrigerator is a heat pump wrapped in a box. Nothing inside makes cold. A compressor pulls heat out of the cabinet and dumps it into your kitchen through coils at the back or under the front. The floor beside a working fridge feels warm. One machine serves two zones, a fresh food compartment near 37 F, or 3 C, and a freezer near 0 F, or minus 18 C. Those two numbers are the entire job.

The sealed system sets the rest

The sealed system, meaning compressor, refrigerant, condenser coil and evaporator coil, sets how the appliance behaves daily. A single-speed compressor has two states, on and off, so cabinet temperature saws up and down by 3 to 5 degrees F between cycles and you hear every start. A variable-speed compressor, sold as inverter, throttles instead of switching: it holds within about 1 degree and runs near 35 to 40 dBA rather than 45 and above. Count the evaporators too, the cold coils that actually chill the air. One evaporator blows a single air stream through both compartments, so freezer odors reach your milk and fresh food dries faster. Two keep the fresh side near 45 percent humidity instead of 30. Frost-free means a heater on a timer, warming that coil every 8 to 12 hours so melt drains to a pan above the compressor; block the tube and water pools under the crispers.

Pick the layout for your kitchen

Pick the layout against your kitchen, not your taste, and read the style guides below for detail. Top-Freezer returns the most cubic feet per dollar, close to 18 in a 30 inch cabinet. Bottom-Freezer raises salad and leftovers to eye level for households that cook fresh most nights. Side-by-Side needs only about 24 inches of clear floor for its narrow doors, the answer when an island sits 40 inches away, though neither side swallows a sheet pan. French-Door pairs those narrow doors with a full width shelf, so a half sheet pan of 18 by 13 inches lies flat. Counter-Depth names a depth, not a layout: the same models come at 24 to 27 inches deep instead of 30 to 35, buying back walkway at the price of 4 to 6 cubic feet. Size by household: 4 to 6 cubic feet of fresh food per adult.

What ice and water cost

Features charge rent in space, cash and repairs. Through-the-door ice and water eats 15 to 25 percent of a Side-by-Side freezer, adds a fill valve and a tube that ices over, wants a 40 to 60 dollar filter twice a year, and is the assembly technicians see most. Counter-depth cabinets cost 400 to 800 dollars more than the same model at standard depth. Dual ice makers, flexible temperature drawers and door-in-door panels each add a gasket, motor or sensor to fail once the one year parts warranty lapses. Running cost lands lower than people fear and higher than they check: a current full-size model draws 350 to 600 kWh a year, or 50 to 100 dollars, while a 20 year old spare in the garage burns twice that.

Read the energy label

Judge the machine, not the trim. Read the kWh per year figure on the energy label and compare it only against models of the same capacity, because percentage claims shift with the baseline. Ask what the sealed system warranty covers: 10 years on compressor and coils with 1 year on the rest is normal, and a 5 year sealed system tells you something. Open the door to 90 degrees, all many kitchens allow, then pull the crisper fully out; plenty of models jam there. Compare usable shelf space rather than printed volume, which counts the room an ice maker occupies. Shut the door on a slip of paper and tug: it should drag everywhere around the frame. Check that shelves, bins and gaskets are still sold, because a cracked bin retires more refrigerators than a dead compressor.

Power and water

Installation is the simplest of any large appliance and still fails in two places, power and water. Use a grounded 115 volt circuit of 15 or 20 amps that nothing else shares, and skip the extension cord, since a long thin lead drops voltage and cooks compressors. Any model making ice needs a cold supply with its own shut-off. The self-piercing saddle valve packed into cheap kits is prohibited by plumbing codes in many places and weeps behind the cabinet for years, so have a plumber tee into the line properly and check what your local code demands. Respect the installation drawing clearances, often 1 to 2 inches at the back and an inch above. If the appliance traveled on its side, stand it up for the hours the manual states, often 4 to 24, before switching on.

Twenty minutes a year

Plan on 10 to 15 years, and twenty minutes of maintenance a year to reach the top of it. Dust on the condenser coils is the most common reason a fridge runs nonstop and still cools badly. This adds 10 to 25 percent to the electricity used, so vacuum behind the toe kick or rear panel twice a year. Wash gaskets in warm soapy water, because sugar and grease harden into a film that stops the seal closing. Keep a cheap thermometer in each compartment, since the control reads 1 to 5 and not degrees. Once a repair quote passes half the price of a replacement on a unit older than 8 years, replacing wins on running cost alone.

Fit & sizing

  • Measure the opening at the floor, at counter height and at the top, because walls are rarely square. Full-size cabinets run 30, 33 and 36 inches wide and need half an inch of side clearance plus the 1 to 2 inch rear gap the maker specifies.
  • Walk the delivery route with a tape. Doorways, stair turns and tight halls want about 36 inches clear, and taking a door off its hinges buys roughly 2 inches.
  • Check the hinge side against the nearest wall: a full-width door has to swing past 90 degrees before the crisper drawer clears the frame. A wall within 3 inches of the hinge traps that drawer for good.
  • Size the interior at 4 to 6 cubic feet of fresh food space per adult. This gives 14 to 18 cubic feet total for two people and 20 to 25 for four. A counter-depth version of the same width returns 4 to 6 cubic feet less.
  • Confirm a grounded 115 volt outlet on a 15 or 20 amp circuit within about 3 feet, carrying nothing else, because power cords on refrigerators are short and extension leads are not an option.
  • For ice or chilled water, find a cold supply within roughly 6 feet with its own shut-off valve, and budget for a plumber to fit a proper tee rather than the self-piercing saddle valve in a kit.

Caring for refrigerators

  • Vacuum the condenser coils behind the toe kick or the rear panel every 6 months, and every 3 with a shedding pet, because dust makes the compressor run longer and adds 10 to 25 percent to the electricity it uses.
  • Close each door on a slip of paper and pull it out once a month. No drag means the gasket has taken a set, and a leaking seal ices the freezer and warms the fresh food side at the same time.
  • Replace the water filter every 6 months or 200 to 300 gallons even while flow looks fine, since spent carbon stops removing anything and a clogged element starves the ice maker.
  • Clear the defrost drain as soon as water pools under the crispers or ice sheets across the freezer floor. The tube is frozen or plugged, and ignoring it soaks the insulation, which never fully dries.
  • Keep a thermometer on a middle shelf and another in the freezer, holding 37 F, or 3 C, and 0 F, or minus 18 C, because the numbered control is a setting and not a reading.
  • Leave the top and back clear of stored boxes. That is where the cabinet sheds its heat, and covering it is the quiet reason a refrigerator in a tight alcove runs all night.

What size refrigerator do I actually need?
Allow 4 to 6 cubic feet of fresh food space per adult. That puts one or two people at 14 to 18 cubic feet total, a family of four at 20 to 25, and anyone who shops weekly or buys in bulk at the top of their band. Counter-depth models lose 4 to 6 cubic feet at the same width, so step up a width if you choose one.
What temperature should I set it to?
Hold 37 F, or 3 C, in the fresh food compartment and 0 F, or minus 18 C, in the freezer. Above 40 F bacteria multiply fast, and below about 32 F your lettuce freezes. The dial marked 1 to 5 is a setting, not a temperature, so put a dial thermometer on a middle shelf, wait 24 hours and adjust from what it reads.
Is counter-depth worth the extra cost?
It buys walkway, not storage. A counter-depth cabinet sits 24 to 27 inches deep instead of 30 to 35, costs 400 to 800 dollars more and gives back 4 to 6 cubic feet of food space. Choose it when the aisle in front would otherwise fall under about 42 inches. Doors and handles still project past the counter, so it is rarely truly flush.
How long should one last, and when do I stop repairing it?
Expect 10 to 15 years. Small repairs stay worth doing, since a fan motor, a thermostat or a door gasket runs 150 to 350 dollars. A sealed system failure is different: replacing a compressor costs 500 to 1,200 dollars and every other part is the same age. The usual rule is to replace once a quote passes half the price of a new unit on an appliance older than 8 years.
Should I pay for the ice and water dispenser?
Only if you use ice daily. In a Side-by-Side it swallows 15 to 25 percent of the freezer, and it brings a water valve, a fill tube that can freeze, a dispenser flap and a filter at 40 to 60 dollars twice a year. Technicians service that assembly more than any other part of a modern refrigerator. Two ice trays and a jug never leak.
Can I keep the old refrigerator in the garage?
Check its ambient rating first. Many units read room temperature in the fresh food compartment only. So once the garage falls below roughly 55 F the compressor stops calling for cooling and the freezer thaws while the fridge still looks fine. Heat above 110 F works it to death instead. A 20 year old spare also burns close to 1,200 kWh a year, which is real money for a few drinks.
How much does a refrigerator cost to run?
A current full-size model uses about 350 to 600 kWh a year, which is 50 to 100 dollars at 17 cents a unit. The energy label prints that annual kWh figure, and it is the only fair comparison between two models of the same capacity. Dusty coils, a failed gasket or a warm alcove can push real use 25 percent above the label.
Do I need a plumber for the water line?
Usually yes, and sometimes by law. Cheap kits ship a self-piercing saddle valve, which many plumbing codes prohibit and which is a known slow leaker behind a cabinet nobody ever moves. A proper tee with a quarter-turn shut-off and a braided steel line is a short job for a plumber. Rules vary by country and locality, so check yours rather than trusting the kit.
