A washing machine is a perforated drum inside a sealed tub, driven by a motor and fed by a water valve. It runs three phases in order: wash, rinse, spin. Washing soaks fabric in detergent solution and moves it so soil lifts off. Rinsing flushes that solution out. Spinning turns the drum fast enough to fling water through the holes to a pump. Size is quoted two ways: cubic feet of drum volume, where 4.5 to 5.3 covers most full size machines and 2.2 to 2.6 covers a compact one, or kilograms of dry laundry, usually 7 to 11. Spin speed is given in rpm, revolutions per minute, and it sets how wet the load is at the end.
Two ways the load is moved
Two mechanisms move the load, and every style below follows from which one a machine uses. A horizontal drum lies on its side and lifts clothes up the wall on molded ribs so they fall back through a shallow pool. So a Front-Load Washer needs only enough water to wet the laundry, often 13 to 17 gallons per cycle. A vertical drum stands upright and has to push the load instead: an Agitator Top-Load twists a finned post through it, while an Impeller Top-Load spins a low plate that drags clothes into a current. Older vertical machines filled until water covered everything, reaching 30 to 40 gallons. Horizontal drums balance well enough for 1,200 to 1,400 rpm; vertical ones usually stop near 700 to 900. A load spun at 1,400 rpm leaves the drum holding about 45 percent of its dry weight in water, against roughly 60 percent at 800. That gap is worth 15 to 25 minutes of dryer time on every load.
Buy for your weekly load
Buy for the largest load you run weekly, not the largest you can picture. About 4 pounds of dry laundry fits per cubic foot. So 4.5 cubic feet takes roughly 18 pounds, or two packed baskets, and swallows a king comforter with room to tumble. Two people rarely need past 3.5 cubic feet. A household of four doing 5 or 6 loads a week sits comfortably at 4.5 to 5.0, and above that you pay for capacity that works best on bedding day only. Space decides the rest: a 27 inch closet points to a stacked pair or a Compact Washer at 24 inches wide, a studio with no vent and one outlet points to an All-in-One Washer-Dryer, and a bad back points to a top loading lid or a front loader on a pedestal that lifts the door 12 to 15 inches.
What front loading costs
Each of those choices bills you somewhere. Front loading buys water efficiency and hard extraction, then charges you a door gasket that holds water after every cycle, a normal program of 75 to 110 minutes instead of 45 to 60, and a locked door mid cycle. Top loading buys speed, a lower price and standing access, then charges you in water, in fabric wear against the post, and in a wetter load for the dryer. An impeller frees the post's space and charges you in tangling when you pack the tub. The combined machine saves a whole cabinet and charges hardest: it dries less than it washes, so you unload part of it between phases, and one fault removes washing and drying together. Running cost sits in heated water, not the motor: a certified full size machine draws only 100 to 200 kilowatt hours a year itself, while the water it heats costs more. Moving warm cycles to cold is the biggest saving available.
Judge the parts you will touch
Judge a machine by the parts you will end up touching. On a front loader, find the drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front and check it opens by hand, because that trap catches every coin and hairpin. A model without access turns a two minute job into a service visit. Confirm the leveling feet lock with a nut instead of only threading in. Read the spin speed as a number and the stated normal cycle time beside it, since a machine can reach an efficiency rating by simply running two hours. A 10 year warranty on a direct drive motor, meaning the drum turns without a belt, is a genuine signal. On a top loader, ask whether deep fill applies to every cycle or to one. On any front loader, confirm a tub clean program exists and the gasket is sold as a spare part.
Let it dry out
Most of keeping a washer alive is letting it dry out. Leave the door and the detergent drawer open a hand's width between loads, because a sealed gasket holds a film of water and grows biofilm within a week. Run the tub clean cycle monthly with the product the manual names, since the smell lives in the outer tub you cannot reach. Measure detergent instead of pouring to the cap line. 1 to 2 tablespoons of low sudsing liquid covers a normal load in soft water. Surplus soap does not rinse away, it pads the fabric and stays. Once a year, lay a level across the drum in both directions, squeeze the hoses for soft spots, and swap rubber ones at five years however they look. A washer that walks during spin is wrecking its own bearings. Bearings are the failure that ends most machines around 10 to 13 years.

Full size cabinets measure 27 inches wide and 30 to 34 inches deep with the door shut. Leave 6 inches behind for hoses and 24 inches clear in front so a front door can swing fully open.
Walk the route before you order. A full size washer weighs 200 to 250 pounds and will not turn a stair landing much under 33 inches on the diagonal, so measure the tightest doorway and corner, not just the laundry room.
Size the drum by weight rather than by claims: roughly 4 pounds of dry laundry per cubic foot. Weigh one full basket on a bathroom scale, then decide how many of those you want to wash at once.
You need hot and cold shutoff valves within 4 feet, a grounded outlet on its own circuit, and a drain standpipe at the height your manual gives. Minimum and maximum standpipe heights are set by local plumbing code, so check the code as well as the manual.
Supply pressure has to sit inside the range on the data plate, often 20 to 120 psi. As a rough test, if a bathtub tap takes more than 90 seconds to deliver 5 gallons, have the supply looked at before you buy.
Stack only with the kit approved for that exact pair. Once stacked, the dryer controls land 55 to 70 inches off the floor, so hold a tape measure against the wall and check the shortest user can reach them.

Caring for washing machines
Leave the door and the dispenser drawer open a hand's width between loads. A closed gasket keeps standing water in its folds, and the film that makes a front loader smell forms in about a week.
Run the tub clean cycle monthly using the cleaner or bleach dose the manual names. The residue behind the odor sits in the outer tub, where no amount of wiping the drum will reach it.
Open the drain pump filter every three months on any front loading or combined machine. Coins, hairpins and lint settle there, and the first symptom of a blocked filter is a drain error rather than a full filter.
Measure detergent instead of filling the cap: 1 to 2 tablespoons of low sudsing liquid suits a normal load in soft water. Extra suds cushion the fabric so soil stays in it and residue stays on it.

What size washer does a family of four actually need?
Between 4.5 and 5.0 cubic feet. That holds 18 to 20 pounds of dry laundry, takes a king comforter, and covers 5 or 6 loads a week without cramming. Two people can drop to 3.0 or 3.5. One caveat: a drum you fill to 5.0 cubic feet needs about 7.4 cubic feet of dryer to tumble in, or the time you saved washing goes straight back into drying.
Why does my front loader smell, and can I fix it?
Water stays in the folds of the door gasket and in the outer tub after every cycle, and leftover detergent feeds whatever grows there. It is usually fixable. Dry the gasket after the last load, leave the door and drawer open between loads, cut your detergent dose roughly in half, and run a tub clean cycle every month. If the smell survives two months of that, the gasket may need replacing.
Do top loading machines clean worse than front loaders?
Not automatically, though the average front loader tests better on stains and rinses more completely, because tumbling through a concentrated solution beats sloshing through a dilute one. A good impeller machine closes much of that gap. The difference nobody argues about is extraction. 700 to 900 rpm leaves a load far wetter than 1,200 to 1,400, and your dryer pays for it.
Does spin speed matter as much as capacity?
For your daily routine, more. A load spun at 1,400 rpm comes out holding roughly 45 percent of its dry weight in water. At 800 rpm it holds about 60 percent. That extra water is 15 to 25 minutes of dryer time and the energy behind it, on every load, for the life of the machine. If you air dry, high spin means clothes stop dripping and are wearable hours sooner.
Can I put a washing machine on an upper floor?
Usually, with two precautions. Spin at 1,200 rpm and above throws real force into a wood joist floor, so the machine must be dead level and a floor that flexes underfoot mid span will amplify every wobble. Second, fit a drain pan plumbed to a drain, because a leak upstairs ruins two ceilings. The pan adds 1.5 to 2 inches of height, which matters under a counter.
How long should a washer last before I stop repairing it?
Plan on 10 to 13 years. Pumps, valves, door locks and control boards are worth fixing at almost any age, since the parts are cheap and the labor is short. Drum bearings draw the line: that job means splitting the tub, and past year eight the quote often lands near half the price of a new machine. Replace at that point.
Is a combined washer dryer a real substitute for a pair?
For one or two people with no vent and one cabinet of space, yes. For anyone else, no. A combined machine dries less than it washes. So a full wash has to be split before the drying stage, a complete sequence can run 3 to 6 hours. You cannot start load two while load one dries. A single fault also takes both jobs away.
