Desiccant Dehumidifier

Inside a Desiccant Dehumidifier a wheel coated in silica gel or zeolite turns slowly through the airstream, holding water molecules on its surface. A small heater warms one segment of that wheel to release the water into a separate stream, where it condenses and drains into a tank. No compressor and no refrigerant means a machine of roughly 13 to 20 pounds that you can carry upstairs one handed, and one that will run on its side without a settling period.

Temperature draws the line against a Refrigerant Dehumidifier. That machine is cheaper per pint in a warm room because it pays for no regeneration heater, but its coil ices below about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Desiccant equipment holds most of its capacity down near 34 degrees. It also runs quieter, around 34 to 45 decibels, and warms the room by 2 to 5 degrees. This is a gift in a cold garage and a nuisance in a July bedroom.

Unheated garages, workshops, boats, caravans, holiday homes shut up over winter and indoor laundry drying are where it works best. Skip it for summer humidity in a warm climate, where a refrigerant machine removes the same water for roughly half the electricity. Power sits near 300 to 700 watts more or less continuously. This is not the low consumption choice people assume from the light weight and the quiet fan.

Check the temperature at which the extraction figure was measured, because a rating taken at 68 degrees and one taken at 41 are not comparable numbers. Look for a laundry mode with a directable louver, a continuous drain outlet, a washable filter and a tank you can lift full without spilling. Confirm a replacement filter exists for the model. Read the heater wattage, since that number decides your running cost far more than the extraction rating does.

Keep the filter clean above everything else, as dust reaching the wheel bakes on during regeneration and permanently cuts capacity. Empty the tank and leave the exhaust unblocked. Do not run it under a drying rack draped so the outlet is covered, and do not leave it unattended among solvents or sawdust, because it contains a live heating element. Store it dry and upright, then run it for an hour after a long idle spell before judging its output.
