Refrigerant Dehumidifier

A Refrigerant Dehumidifier draws room air across a coil chilled below the dew point, condenses water onto it, and drips that water into a bucket or a hose. The dried air then crosses the hot condenser coil and returns to the room two to five degrees warmer, because this is an air conditioner with its outdoor half standing indoors. Capacity is printed in pints per 24 hours, measured since 2019 at 65 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 percent relative humidity.

A Desiccant Dehumidifier keeps working near freezing, weighs less and runs quieter, though it uses more electricity per pint in a warm room. A Thermoelectric Dehumidifier removes so little that it belongs in a wardrobe. Whole-House Dehumidifier equipment does this job ducted, at better efficiency and several times the price. The refrigerant portable is the efficient answer in a warm damp basement in July at 1.5 to 2.0 liters removed per kilowatt hour, and the wrong answer in an unheated garage in January.

Basements above 60 degrees, laundry rooms, humid summer climates and drying a room after a leak are its territory. Below roughly 60 degrees the coil frosts and collection stops, so read the minimum operating temperature and check whether defrost runs automatically, since some models manage down to 41 degrees at a slow rate. Sizing from floor area alone underbuys, because dampness you can see or smell adds 4 to 8 pints on top of the area figure.

Compare pints only under the current test, since any figure from before 2019 is about a third optimistic. Read Integrated Energy Factor in liters per kilowatt hour and treat 1.5 as your floor. Confirm the continuous drain port sits high enough above your floor drain for gravity to work, or buy a model with an internal pump. Weigh the bucket against the capacity, because a 50 pint machine fills a 12 pint bucket four times a day. Then check the model against your national recall list, since this category has been recalled repeatedly for overheating.

Wash the filter every 2 to 4 weeks and vacuum the coil once a year, as a blocked filter starves the coil and makes the compressor run longer for fewer pints. Give it 6 to 12 inches of clear air at the intake and the exhaust. Flush the hose with vinegar to clear algae. Keep the doors and windows of the space shut while it runs, or you are drying the outdoors. Expect 5 to 10 years, and read a machine that stops filling the bucket as a refrigerant leak.
