How a dishwasher actually cleans
A dishwasher never touches your plates. Inside a sealed tub, a pump drives water at 120 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit through rotating spray arms, detergent enzymes break starch and protein off the surface, and the jets carry the loosened residue down into a filter. Capacity is quoted in place settings, one setting being the plate, bowl, side plate, cup, saucer, glass and cutlery for a single person. Full size machines hold 12 to 16 settings inside an opening of roughly 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 34 inches high. This is close to the 60 centimeter standard used across Europe.
The filter and the tub
What the machine is made of decides how it behaves. Soil leaves the water in one of two ways: through a manual filter you unclip and rinse under a tap, or through a hard food disposer that grinds debris, adds 4 to 8 decibels of noise and removes a monthly chore. A heating element in the sump raises wash temperature and, in some machines, warms the air at the end. Condensation drying skips that heat entirely, because a stainless steel tub cools faster than the dishes do. So vapor migrates to the wall and runs down the side. Plates come out dry and plastic does not, since plastic holds too little heat to evaporate the film sitting on it. Cycle length follows the same physics. An eco program takes 3 to 4 hours because a long soak at lower temperature does the work that heat and volume would do in one hour, and it draws 3 to 4 gallons instead of 5 to 7. Noise is quoted in decibels on a logarithmic scale where 10 fewer decibels sounds roughly half as loud. So 44 dB is a background hum in an open kitchen and 38 dB effectively vanishes.
Which format fits your kitchen
Pick the format from the opening you actually have. A Built-In Dishwasher plumbs permanently into a 24 inch cabinet bay, suits three or more people running about one cycle a day, and offers more rack layouts and programs than any other format. Two different machines wear the name Compact Dishwasher: an 18 inch under counter model holding around 8 settings, and a countertop box holding 4 to 6, both aimed at one or two people in a kitchen that cannot spare 24 inches. Waist height loading is the point of the Dishwasher Drawer, which matters when bending hurts, and a double unit washes in one chamber while you fill the other, though a shallow drawer refuses anything taller than roughly 9 to 12 inches. In a rental you cannot plumb, the Portable Dishwasher rolls to the sink for each cycle and remains the only real answer.
What quiet and speed cost
Each improvement bills you somewhere else. Quiet comes from sound deadening mats, a heavier door and a slower pump. The 40 dB machine costs more and usually runs longer than the 48 dB one. Low water use costs time, which is why the most efficient program on the dial is also the one nobody selects. A third rack frees the cutlery basket but steals 1.5 to 2 inches of height from the upper rack, and tall glasses lose first. Cabinet matched door panels look seamless and add 15 to 25 pounds that the hinge springs must be retensioned for, then complicate replacement in eight years when the next machine expects different panel dimensions.
Ten minutes in the showroom
Judge a candidate in ten minutes with your own dishes in hand. Spin every spray arm and watch for a stall, then hold each arm to the light and confirm no jet hole is blocked. Pull the lower rack out fully. It should roll rather than drag, and the tines should fold flat across at least one section for pans. Take a dinner plate with you, because a 12 inch plate will not stand upright in racks designed around 10.5 inch ones. Remove the filter one handed; if it takes two hands and a diagram, you will not do it monthly. Look under the door for a metal base pan with a float switch, the sensor that shuts the water off when it detects a leak, and ask whether racks, the door gasket, the drain pump and the control board are sold as spare parts at all.
Trapped food and limescale
Two things kill a dishwasher slowly: trapped food and limescale. Food left in the filter gets recirculated. That means every load after a blocked filter is washed in yesterday's soil, and the gritty film that results gets blamed on the detergent. Scale works more quietly. It plates onto the heating element and the spray holes, stretching cycles and starving the jets, and in a hard water area it can end a machine inside five or six years. Dosing matters as much as either, since too much detergent leaves a film that looks exactly like hard water deposit and too little leaves grease. Give it a monthly filter rinse, a periodic descale and a wipe of the door seal. 10 to 12 years is a fair expectation.

Measure the cabinet opening at the front, at the back, at the top and down at the floor. A full size machine needs 24 inches of clear width and 34 inches of height. It is the 23 and three quarter inch measurement at the back that stops the job halfway.
Check the finished floor height before ordering. Tile or a floating floor laid around the old machine often raises the surface by a quarter to half an inch, leaving the new unit too tall to slide in and the old one impossible to pull out without lifting the counter.
Open a door of the same size where the machine will live and measure the floor in front of it: a dropped dishwasher door projects 21 to 25 inches. An island only 30 inches away leaves nobody room to stand and load.
Confirm you can reach the hot water shutoff valve, and that the drain hose can rise into a high loop above the sink base or reach an air gap fitting on the counter. Which of the two your area demands varies by local code, so ask before buying fittings.
Read the electrical requirement before ordering: most built in machines want a dedicated 15 amp circuit, some arrive with a cord and plug, and some must be hard wired. Any new circuit or hard wired connection is work for a licensed electrician.
Your largest dinner plate and tallest glass decide the racks, not the place setting count. Plates over about 11 inches and glasses over 9 inches simply fail in machines built around smaller ones, so measure both at home before you shop.

Caring for dishwashers
Unclip and rinse the filter every month, or every week if you scrape lightly, because a blocked filter recirculates the same soil through the next load and leaves a gritty film on glassware.
Clear the spray arm holes with a straightened paperclip two or three times a year, since limescale narrows the jets and creates a dead zone that no amount of detergent reaches.
Run a descaling cycle with citric acid or a dishwasher cleaner every one to three months in hard water, because scale insulates the heating element, lengthens cycles and slowly cooks the pump seals.
Wipe the door gasket and the lower door lip weekly, as that strip sits outside the spray pattern and grows black mold that only announces itself as a smell months later.
Keep rinse aid topped up and set the softener to your measured water hardness, since rinse aid lowers the surface tension of water so drops sheet off instead of drying into spots.
Prop the door open for 15 minutes after a cycle and dose detergent to the machine's chart rather than filling the cup, because excess detergent leaves a film that is easily mistaken for hard water.

Common questions
Do I need to rinse the dishes first?
Scrape, do not rinse. Detergent enzymes need soil to grip, and the soil sensor reads the first fill, so a pre-rinsed load can trigger a shorter, weaker cycle. Remove bones, seeds, skins and stickers, then load. Rinsing two loads a week under a running tap wastes 15 to 30 gallons a month for no cleaning benefit at all.
Why does the normal cycle take three hours?
Time replaces energy. A long program soaks at lower temperature, lets enzymes work and reuses water across phases. This is how it hits 3 to 4 gallons and a low energy figure. Shorter programs compensate with hotter water and more fills, using 5 to 7 gallons. If you need dishes fast, most machines have a one hour cycle that costs roughly double to run.
Why do plastic containers come out wet when everything else is dry?
Plastic has low thermal mass, meaning it stores very little heat, so it cannot evaporate the water sitting on it once the cycle ends. Ceramic and glass hold enough heat to dry themselves. Load plastics on the upper rack at an angle, use rinse aid, and choose a machine with a heated dry or fan assisted option if plastic containers dominate your loads.
Does a dishwasher really use less water than washing by hand?
Yes, by a large margin. Per cycle, a full size machine uses 3 to 5 gallons. A kitchen tap runs at 1.5 to 2.2 gallons per minute. Ten minutes of washing with the water flowing costs 15 to 22 gallons. Hand washing wins only if you fill a basin, reuse the water and skip rinsing under a running tap.
What noise rating should I actually look for?
Aim for 44 dB or lower in an open plan kitchen and 38 to 42 dB if the kitchen adjoins a bedroom or you run cycles overnight. Above 50 dB you will hear it through a closed door. One caveat: makers quote the figure for their quietest cycle, so a 44 dB machine on a heavy program may run several decibels louder.
Can I install a dishwasher myself?
Swapping a like for like machine into an existing bay is often within reach: water line, drain hose and leveling feet are hand tools. The limits are firm. A new circuit, any hard wired connection and gas work belong to a licensed installer. Some jurisdictions require a permit or a counter mounted air gap. Check local code first, since it varies.
My glasses have gone cloudy. Can I fix them?
Test it first. Soak one glass in white vinegar for five minutes: a haze that lifts is mineral deposit, and rinse aid, a softener setting and a descale will cure it. A haze that stays is etching, which is permanent. Etching comes from soft water plus too much detergent plus high heat, so cut the dose and drop the temperature.
Is a stainless steel tub worth paying for?
Stainless buys three things: condensation drying without a heating element, better sound damping, and no staining from tomato or turmeric. Plastic tubs cost less, tolerate impact better and pair with heated drying that handles plastic containers well. If quiet operation and low energy use matter to you, stainless earns its price; if you mostly wash plastic, it matters less.
