Beach Tote

A beach tote is a tote chosen for what it survives rather than how it looks at a desk. Straw, open weave raffia, canvas and coated fabric account for nearly all of them. The body runs oversize so a towel, a book and sunscreen go in together without stacking.

Material drives behavior here far more than shape does. Open weave straw lets sand fall straight through the gaps instead of collecting in the seams. This is the single most useful property a beach bag can have. Coated canvas and vinyl go the other way and seal the surface, so salt water wipes off with a cloth, but whatever sand gets inside has to be shaken out. Neither material wants a full lining, because a lining traps damp swimwear and starts to smell within one season.

The contrast with a structured tote could not be sharper, given there is no board, no feet and often no lining to protect. Shoppers come closest in shape but are built for pavement, and their leather or cotton marks permanently the first time it meets sunscreen. Scaled down totes will not hold a single towel, so the mini never competes for this job.

Sun holidays, pool days, boat trips and picnics are the obvious uses, and the same bag doubles for a farmers market. Buy the oversize version if you pack for more than yourself, since two towels alone fill a medium tote. Rain is the case against straw, because wet straw sags out of shape and dries stiff.

Run your hand around the inside seams before buying. Straw and raffia should be woven over a real frame or backed with cotton, since bare woven edges shed and scratch whatever you put in. Sunscreen is the real enemy: it stains coated fabric and pale canvas on contact, so wipe spills the moment they happen rather than once you get home. Rinse salt off with fresh water and dry the bag in shade, because direct sun bleaches straw brittle.
