Slouch Shoulder Bag

A slouch shoulder bag has no internal frame, no boarded base and often no stiffener in the sides, so the body collapses toward whatever you put in it. Unlike a hobo, the outline is not cut as a crescent: it begins as a rectangle or a soft trapezoid and simply surrenders its edges under load.

Soft leather makes the style work, and the grade of that leather shows immediately. A thin, loosely tanned hide falls into deep folds and feels luxurious but scratches and stretches. Thicker soft leather drapes more slowly and lasts longer. Nothing supports the mouth, so the opening gapes when the bag is full and shuts to a slit when empty. A zip top or a snap works best here more than on a structured bag. Straps tend to be wide and soft too, and that width does genuine work, spreading three or four pounds across the shoulder instead of into a line.

Hobos are the closest relative, and the cut is the difference: a hobo is a crescent designed to sag in the middle. This keeps a straight top edge and sags at the sides. The flap shoulder bag is its opposite in every respect, stiff and slow and secure. Shoppers hold more but swing from two handles and stay open, where this sits on one shoulder and closes.

Everyday carrying, weekends and days with an unpredictable load suit it, since the bag looks right whether it holds a jacket or a wallet. Real weight on one shoulder is more comfortable here than anywhere else, because soft sides mold to your body instead of pressing a corner into your ribs. Fast retrieval is the thing you give up, and a soft bag protects a laptop or a pair of glasses not at all.

Hold the bag by its strap and see how it hangs empty. Good soft leather drapes in a few large folds; poor leather wrinkles into many small ones, and those small wrinkles become permanent creases. Feel the base for a thin hidden panel, which better versions include to stop the bottom sagging into a point. Interior pockets decide whether you can find anything, so count them before buying. Loose tissue inside keeps the folds from setting, and a hook through the strap is what puts a permanent kink in it.
