Baguette (Shoulder Bags)

A baguette is a small bag much longer than it is tall, worn on a strap short enough that the body sits in the armpit rather than at the waist. Its name comes from the loaf, and the proportion is the whole idea. Roughly twice as wide as it is deep from top edge to bottom.

Strap drop of about four to seven inches is what defines it. That length holds the bag high and tight against the ribs. That is why a baguette barely moves as you walk and why it is one of the few bags you can wear in a crush without holding onto it. A long shallow body lets a phone lie flat with a card case beside it, but nothing tall goes in at all. Closures are usually a top zip or a small flap, and many use one chunky buckle or clasp as the single decorative element.

Chains hang free and sit lower, while a baguette is pinned in place by your arm. Beside a flap shoulder bag it is smaller, softer and far less formal in construction even when the leather is expensive. Slouch shoulder bags hold several times as much and move constantly on the body. Clutches cover the same occasions, and the strap is the difference: you keep both hands, though the space under one arm is spoken for.

Nights out, dinners and city days where a phone, a card and a lipstick is the entire load suit it best. Wearing it under a coat works unusually well, since the bag sits inside the arm rather than dangling below it. Large phones need measuring first, because some baguettes are cut to a length a 6.7 inch phone will not clear. Travel, work and anything involving a bottle or a notebook belong to a different bag.

Wear it in the shop rather than holding it, since strap drop is the entire experience and an inch either way changes it. Ask whether a second strap is included, because many now ship with two and the longer one turns a night bag into a day bag. Underarm wear rubs the top corner against clothing, so that corner goes first and its finish tells you how the bag will age. A little padding inside stops the long shallow body folding across the middle in storage.
