Flap

Folds a panel over the opening and fastens it with a lock, magnet or clasp.

The basics

What to know about flap

A flap is a panel that folds down over the opening and fastens to the front with a turnlock, a push lock, a magnet or a buckle. Coverage is the point. The panel physically overlaps the mouth of the bag, so rain runs off the front rather than in. Contents also stay out of casual view.

How far the flap reaches decides how much it protects. One covering at least a third of the front sheds water past the opening and stays shut against a knock. A short flap leaves a channel at the sides where rain and fingers still reach. The fastener sets the security level independently: a magnet under a flap buys convenience, and a turnlock or buckle under the same flap resists a real pull.

Access takes two motions and often two hands, since the flap has to be lifted, held and refastened each time. The failure people actually meet is fit rather than strength. Pack the bag full in the shop and try to fasten it. A loaded bag pushes its front panel forward by an inch or more, and plenty of flaps then stop reaching their lock. Inspect where the flap folds too: that crease takes every open and close, and it is where leather cracks and coated fabric splits first. A stitched or lightly padded fold line lasts far longer than a single thin layer bent over an edge.

Best for

When it works well

  • Everyday use fits a flap, which covers the opening without demanding the seconds a zip takes.
  • Light rain runs off the front panel rather than into the bag.
  • Defined shapes hold better under a flap, since the panel keeps the front of the bag flat.
  • Pairing a flap with a turnlock gets you cover and holding force from one closure.
