Euro Top (Mattresses)

Get pillow top softness packed flush inside the cover, so the edges stay usable.

Also called: euro pillow top

The basics

What to know about Euro Top (Mattresses)

A Euro top builds its plush comfort layer inside the mattress cover, stacked flush with the edges instead of sewn on above them. From the side it reads as one clean block with a thicker top section, and that flush construction, not the fill, is what separates it from everything else on the surface style shelf.

Packing the layer edge to edge changes how it behaves. The fill, usually 2 to 4 inches of foam or dense fiber, is compressed against the border on all four sides, so it cannot drift toward the middle the way a loosely attached pad can. Support reaches the perimeter, which matters when you sit on the edge to dress or sleep near it in a shared bed. The trade runs the other way too: with the fill held under tension, the first touch feels firmer and less cloud-like than the loft a pillow top gives.

Against its nearest sibling, the pillow top, the difference is attachment. A pillow top's pad hangs from a recessed seam, lofts higher, feels softer on contact and dips sooner; a Euro top sacrifices some of that plushness for slower wear and a firm edge. A tight top sits one step further along, skipping the added layer altogether and leaving the feel to the internal build. Choose Euro when you want cushioning you can still roll to the edge of, and pillow when the sink-in feeling is the whole point.

Couples get the clearest benefit, since two people on a queen, 60 by 80 inches, each effectively sleep near an edge, and edge collapse steals usable width from both. Combination sleepers who change position at night do better here than on a pillow top, because moving across packed fill takes less effort than climbing out of a soft crater. Sleepers chasing maximum initial softness belong on a pillow top instead, and strict budgets do better with a tight top plus a replaceable topper.

Sit on the corner in the showroom and note how far you sink, since the packed border is the feature you are paying for and a mushy corner means it is missing. Compare a hand press at the center against one at the edge: a good Euro top feels close to the same in both places. Turn it head to foot every three months, and skip flipping, which the one sided build rules out.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Couples on a queen or king keep usable width, because the packed layer supports the edges two sleepers drift toward.
  • Combination sleepers move easier across firm packed fill than out of a soft crater.
  • People who sit on the bed's edge to dress get a border that holds instead of folding.
  • Buyers who found pillow tops too soft but tight tops too hard land in the middle here.
