The basics

What to know about plush

Plush names the soft end of a brand's lineup. The comfort layer, meaning the padding above the support core, is thick and slow to resist. Under a shoulder or a hip, the surface compresses several inches before the firmer core underneath takes any load.

Softness is built rather than sprayed on. Makers reach it with deeper memory foam, softer foam grades, a pillow top sewn onto the cover, or a quilted layer of fiber. The inches above the core matter more than the word on the label. Ask how thick the comfort layer is. A layer of 3 inches and up reads as really plush. An inch of soft foam over a firm core does not, whatever it is called.

Sleeping on one feels like being caught. Pressure at the shoulder drops because the surface moves out of the way. That is why side sleepers and lighter bodies, roughly under 130 pounds, rate plush beds highest. Turning over gets slower, since you climb out of a hollow every time.

Spinal alignment is what you risk. Hips are the heaviest part of most bodies, and they sink first. A bed too soft for your weight bows the lower back for eight hours a night. Stiffness on waking that eases within an hour of getting up is the classic sign. A topper firms a soft bed only slightly, which makes a plush mistake harder to undo than a firm one.

Best for

When it works well

  • Side sleepers, because the shoulder and hip need somewhere to go before the spine will lie straight.
  • Lighter bodies under roughly 130 pounds, which never compress a firmer surface far enough to reach its contour.
  • People with shoulder or hip pain, since relief comes from the surface yielding at exactly those points.
  • Sleepers who hold one position most of the night and do not need to move quickly out of a hollow.
