Hybrid

A hybrid pairs a pocketed coil core with at least 2 inches of foam or latex above it. That threshold matters, because an innerspring with a single inch of foam quilted on top is still an innerspring and some sellers call it a hybrid regardless. Look for the comfort layer thickness stated in inches before you accept the name.

Each half solves the other's problem. Coils below keep air moving and hold the perimeter, so the bed sleeps cooler and does not collapse when you sit on the side. Foam above contours to the shoulder and hip and absorbs most of a partner's movement, since every coil is pocketed and compresses on its own.

So hybrids now dominate the mid and upper market. In use they feel more responsive than an all-foam bed and more forgiving than a bare innerspring. They also suit couples who disagree, because the coil core can be zoned firmer through the middle third where hips load it hardest.

Weight and price are the costs. A queen hybrid often runs 70 to 100 pounds. This makes rotating it a two-person job and delivery to an upstairs room a real question. It also prices above either parent construction. A cheap hybrid is usually cheap in the comfort layer. Thin low-density foam over good coils dips within two or three years and takes the whole bed down with it.
