The basics
What to know about Crib Mattresses
One mattress in the whole category treats firm as a safety requirement rather than a preference, and it is the crib mattress. US rules size a full crib mattress at roughly 27 1/4 by 51 5/8 inches and cap its thickness at 6 inches, dimensions written to leave no gap an infant can slip into at the rail.
Firmness works differently here than anywhere else in the aisle. An infant sleeping face down on a soft surface can sink in and rebreathe trapped air. The surface must resist and spring back flat instantly rather than cradle. Foam versions get there with high density polyurethane. Innerspring versions use a stiff coil grid with a firm border rod, the steel wire framing the perimeter that keeps edges from collapsing when a toddler stands on them. Many are built dual sided, a firm infant face and a slightly softer toddler face, flipped once the child passes their first birthday and moves toward a toddler bed conversion.
Its adult siblings all point the opposite direction, which is the trap. Pillow top and Euro top logic, softer is nicer, is exactly wrong under an infant. No crib product carries an added plush layer for that reason. Mattress in a box thinking also fails here, since a crib mattress must arrive at full firmness with no expansion period. Judge this purchase against safe sleep guidance rather than against how any adult mattress feels.
Buy new for every child, including the second, since foam that carried one infant for two years has already softened where it matters. A secondhand mattress can hide mold you cannot see. Families planning a toddler bed conversion should pick a dual sided model up front. Humid homes do better with foam plus a fully waterproof cover, which wipes clean instead of absorbing.
Run the two finger test on delivery: press two fingers between mattress and crib side, and a gap wider than that means the wrong size, full stop. Push a palm into the center and watch it return flat within a second, then repeat at the corners, which soften first. Keep a waterproof protector on from night one, wipe the surface weekly during illness or leaks. Check monthly for sag as the child grows, replacing at any visible dip rather than on a schedule.
Best for
When to choose this style
- First cribs need a new mattress, since a used one can hide softened zones and mold you cannot see.
- Families planning the toddler conversion save by choosing a dual sided model on day one.
- Messy reality favors foam with a fully waterproof cover, which wipes clean instead of absorbing.
- Humid homes do better with wipe-clean surfaces that never hold moisture against the sleeper.
