Once opened, the mattress regains most of its height within hours and its final feel within 24 to 72 hours, and new foam releases a faint chemical smell, called off-gassing, that airs out over a few days in a ventilated room. You also become the delivery crew: the sealed box weighs 60 to 100 pounds and is awkward rather than fragile.

The real sibling comparison is not another surface style but the showroom mattress. Pillow top, Euro top and tight top all exist in boxed form. The box changes how you shop rather than how you sleep: no lying on it first, replaced by a home trial window, usually 90 to 120 nights, with pickup or donation on return. Luxury collections sit at the opposite pole, hand built too thick and too structured to compress, and sold with in-home delivery instead.

Walk-up apartments, tight stairwells and rural addresses that freight carriers ignore are where the format wins outright. First mattresses, kid's rooms and guest beds fit well, since the value tier is strong and mistakes are cheap to return. Buyers set on a two sided flippable build or a traditional hand-tied innerspring should shop floor models. Whoever cannot move an 80 pound cylinder alone needs a second pair of hands on delivery day.

Read the trial terms before the reviews: the nights of trial, who hauls a return away, and whether a refund is full. Density numbers still matter in boxed foam, so treat a maker that publishes 3 pounds per cubic foot and up for memory foam layers as more than one that lists only feel words. Unbox within a month of delivery, since foam stored compressed too long can fail to expand fully, cut the plastic away from the fabric carefully, and never try to re-roll it, because home compression without the factory press creases foam permanently.
