What to know about latex
Latex is rubber foam, made either from the sap of the rubber tree or from a synthetic equivalent, and it behaves nothing like memory foam. Press it and it returns at once. That instant recovery is what people mean when they say a latex bed floats you rather than swallowing you.
Two production methods divide the material. Dunlop latex is denser and firmer, so it usually forms the support core. Talalay latex is whipped and vacuum-treated before curing. This leaves it lighter, softer and more consistent through the slab, so it usually forms the comfort layer. Both are pinned with holes straight through, and those pinholes are how air moves inside the bed.
Cool sleeping and long life follow from that structure. Open cells and pinholes let heat leave, so latex runs cooler than memory foam though not as cool as an open coil bed. Durability is the strongest claim in the category. A natural latex core often holds its shape for 12 to 15 years, where good polyurethane foam manages 8 to 10.
Cost and weight explain why more people do not own one. Natural latex is among the most expensive constructions sold. A latex core is also dense enough that a queen can pass 100 pounds, which surprises people on delivery day. Anyone with a diagnosed latex allergy should also know that natural latex proteins are present. Processing washes most of them out, and the cover sits between you and the core.
