The basics
What to know about USB Wall Charger
A USB wall charger is a switching power supply wearing a plastic shell. Mains current is rectified into direct current, chopped tens of thousands of times a second by a transistor, passed through a small transformer and smoothed back out at low voltage. That chopping frequency is why the box got small. Gallium nitride transistors switch faster and warmer-running silicon ones do not, so a 65 W gallium nitride charger now occupies the space a 30 W silicon one needed five years ago.
Pick the wattage from the device, not the price. Any phone finishes on 20 to 30 W, and above that the phone simply refuses the extra. Tablets and the lightest laptops want 30 to 45 W. A 13 or 14 inch laptop is happy at 65 W, and a 16 inch machine asks for 96 to 140 W, which needs USB Power Delivery 3.1 and its 28 volt or higher steps. Look for PPS on the label if you charge phones, since that fine voltage control is what lets a handset take high current without cooking itself.
Its nearest siblings do the same electrical job in different packages. A Multi-Port Charging Station is this circuit with more sockets and one shared watt budget. A Car Charger performs the conversion from 12 volts instead of from mains. A Power Bank inserts a battery between the two so the wall is optional. None of them beats a single-port wall charger for delivering a full rated figure to one device with nothing negotiating against it.
Judge by the safety mark first: a UL or ETL listing in the US, CE and UKCA in Europe and the UK, PSE in Japan, CCC in China, each with a traceable number. Read the port label, since one socket on a two-port unit is often the fast one and the other tops out near 18 W. Folding pins survive a bag; fixed pins gouge a laptop screen. Weight is a fair signal, because a real 65 W unit contains a transformer and lands near 110 to 130 g.
Give it clear air, particularly behind a sofa or under a bed where lint gathers on the vents. Wipe the pins occasionally, because tarnish raises resistance and heat at the socket. A charger that buzzes, smells of hot plastic or leaves the outlet plate warm has a failing capacitor and gets replaced rather than watched.

- You travel and need a single small brick that folds flat and covers a phone, tablet and laptop.
- Your laptop charges over USB-C and you would rather carry 130 g than the original supply and its barrel plug.
- You need a bedside or hallway charger that stays in one place and does one job reliably for years.
