The basics
What to know about Charging Cable (Chargers & Power Banks)
A charging cable is copper, shielding and, increasingly, a chip. Every USB-C cable carries 3 amps by default, which at 20 volts is 60 W. Exceeding that requires an e-marker, a small chip in the connector that tells the charger the cable is rated for 5 amps. The 240 W Extended Power Range tier requires a specific higher rating again. This is the most common reason a fast charger underperforms: the negotiation succeeds, the cable declares nothing, and both ends settle politely on 60 W.
Power and data are separate purchases, and the labeling rarely helps. A 240 W charging cable can be USB 2.0 inside, moving files at 480 megabits per second, because the high-speed wire pairs simply are not there. Data grades run 5, 10, 20 and 40 gigabits per second. The version names behind them have been renamed more than once, so ask for the figure in Gbps and the figure in watts by number rather than accepting a version. USB-A to USB-C cables cannot do USB Power Delivery at all, since the standard needs signal pins that USB-A does not have.
Length and thickness cost voltage. A 1 to 2 m cable of adequate gauge is unremarkable. By comparison, a cheap 3 m lead can drop enough voltage that a phone charges at half speed and a laptop refuses to charge under load. Coiled and retractable cables use thinner conductors again. Compared with the Power Bank and Wall Charger it connects, the cable is the cheapest part of the chain and the one that decides what the other two are allowed to do.
Judge the neck rather than the jacket. Molded strain relief that extends 15 to 20 mm behind the plug is what stops the conductors fracturing where the cable flexes. A braided sleeve without it just hides the break. A cable rated for 100 W or more should feel noticeably thicker and should state its watt figure on the connector or a printed band. Cheap unmarked cables occasionally omit the resistor that limits current, which is a genuine fire risk on high wattage chargers.
Grip the connector to unplug, never the lead. Store cables in loose loops rather than wrapped tightly around a brick, because that wrap concentrates every bend into the same 10 mm. Inspect the neck every few months for a kink, a firm spot or exposed shielding, and retire it then. A cable that only works at one angle is already failed and will get hot at the fault.
