What to know about Multi-Port Charging Station (Chargers & Power Banks)
A multi-port charging station puts one larger power supply behind three to eight sockets, usually a mix of USB-C and the older rectangular USB-A. The headline number on the box is the total the unit can produce, not what each port delivers, and that distinction is the whole product. A 100 W station usually gives 100 W to a single USB-C port, then reallocates the moment you plug in a second device. 65 W and 30 W is a common split, and a third device might drop the first to 45 W.
How the split behaves separates a good unit from a frustrating one. Fixed allocation assigns each port a permanent share, so a laptop on a 45 W port stays at 45 W whether or not the others are busy. Dynamic allocation reassigns on the fly and can renegotiate mid-session, which some laptops handle by briefly dropping to battery. Either way, the power distribution table printed on the box or in the manual is the specification that matters. A station that does not publish one is hiding something.
Set against a stack of separate USB Wall Chargers, the station wins on outlet count, cable tidiness and total cost, and loses on redundancy, since one failure takes down every device. Larger desktop versions add pass-through mains sockets and act as a small power strip. A Wireless Charging Pad often appears built into the top surface of these units. This is convenient and adds heat where you least want it.
Count the ports you will really use at once and add the wattages: a laptop at 65 W, a phone at 20 W and two pairs of earbuds at 5 W each needs 95 W of real budget. So a 100 W unit is already tight. Confirm at least two USB-C ports support USB Power Delivery rather than one, since USB-A cannot do it at all. Check the mains lead is detachable, because a fixed lead is how these die.
Leave the unit on a hard surface with air beneath it. Concentrating four charges in one box concentrates the heat too, and stations run 15 to 20 C warmer than a single brick. Blow dust from the ports twice a year, and stop using any unit whose case has warped or discolored around a port.
