What to know about Car Charger
A car charger steps a vehicle's 12 volt supply down to what a USB device wants. This is a simpler conversion than a wall charger makes and produces less heat for the same output. The ceiling comes from the vehicle rather than the adapter: most 12 volt sockets are protected by a 10 to 15 amp fuse. That gives a hard limit of roughly 120 to 180 watts for everything in that circuit. A 30 to 65 W USB Power Delivery adapter sits comfortably inside it; running a 100 W laptop charger and a dashcam from a splitter does not.
The reason to buy one is usually the car's own USB ports. Built-in sockets on vehicles more than a few years old are frequently data ports rated at 0.5 to 1.5 amps, which is 2.5 to 7.5 W. Navigation with the screen at full brightness, mobile data, Bluetooth audio and a mount holding the phone in the sun can draw more than that, so the battery falls while plugged in. A 30 W adapter reverses that and refills the phone during the drive.
Compared with a Power Bank on a road trip, this style is lighter, cheaper and never runs out. A bank keeps working once the engine stops. It shares its electronics with a USB Wall Charger and a Multi-Port Charging Station, and the same rule applies to multiple ports: the rated total splits across them. Cars with a factory USB-C port already delivering 45 W or more do not need one at all, so read the label near the socket before buying.
Choose a model that sits flush rather than protruding 40 mm into a footwell where a knee will find it. Confirm the fit is snug, because a loose adapter in a worn socket arcs, and arcing is how sockets and fuses fail. Check whether your socket is switched with the ignition; on cars where it stays live, an overnight charge can pull a weak starter battery below cranking voltage in a couple of days.
Pull the adapter out before parking a car in summer heat, since a dashboard cabin can pass 60 C and lithium devices left on a charger there age quickly. Keep the socket free of coins and crumbs, which short across the contacts. Replace any adapter whose indicator flickers over bumps, as intermittent contact under load is what melts the plastic body.
