What sun care has to do
Sun care covers everything you put on skin to control what ultraviolet light does to it, plus two products that sit on the same shelf and protect nothing at all. Sunscreen carries the work, and its label makes two separate claims that buyers routinely fuse into one. SPF, meaning sun protection factor, is a measured number for UVB, the shorter wavelength that burns and reddens. Broad spectrum is a second, pass or fail claim that the product also covers UVA, the longer wavelength that reaches deeper skin, drives most visible aging and comes through cloud and window glass. So a tube reading SPF 50 with no broad spectrum wording has been tested against burning alone, and half the damage goes unaddressed. The SPF ladder also flattens quickly: 15 filters roughly 93 percent of UVB, 30 filters roughly 97 percent and 50 filters roughly 98 percent. After-sun treats skin that already took a dose, and self-tanner colors skin without shielding it.
Filters and the carrier
Two parts make any sunscreen, a set of filters and the carrier that spreads them, and both decide the result. Filters divide into two families. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, the mineral pair, stay on the surface as a particle film, absorbing most of the ultraviolet that lands and scattering the rest. So they show a pale cast at the thickness that really protects. Chemical filters, a group that includes avobenzone, octocrylene, octisalate and homosalate, take the energy in and release it as a trace of heat, and they dissolve into a thinner, clearer film. Carrier choice is what you actually feel: a fluid or gel vanishes on oily skin and slides off in surf. A cream holds through sweat and sits heavy on a face. Water resistance is the only performance claim on the bottle with a clock attached. Nothing sold is waterproof, that word left United States labels in 2012 because no product earned it, and a tube may claim only water resistant for 40 minutes or water resistant for 80 minutes. This means the tested SPF survived that long in water and no longer.
Daylight, not season
Daylight decides who needs this, not the season or the temperature. Anyone whose face meets outdoor light most days wants a facial formula built into the morning routine. Here, the Skincare guide places sunscreen as the final step. Deliberate exposure is a different problem needing volume, water resistance and a plan for reapplying, since sand, water and snow bounce light back up and add to what comes from the sky. Deeper skin tones burn less readily and still pigment readily, so tinted formulas carrying iron oxides earn their place: those pigments also screen visible light, which pushes melasma and dark marks along in a way clear sunscreen cannot. Anyone using retinoids or acids from the Skincare shelf has the strongest case of all, because fresh surface skin burns faster and an unprotected retinoid is money spent to undo itself. Babies under six months belong in shade and clothing rather than in product, and fabric rated UPF 50 blocks about 98 percent of ultraviolet all day without a reapplication alarm.
The number nobody prints
Now the number nobody prints on the front. SPF is measured in a lab at 2 milligrams of product per square centimeter of skin, which works out at about a quarter teaspoon for a face and neck and about 30 milliliters, roughly a shot glass, for one adult in swimwear. Measured studies of real people repeatedly find a quarter to a half of that. Protection does not fall in a straight line with the shortfall either, so an SPF 50 spread thin behaves nearer SPF 15 on the skin you are standing in. Reapplication is the second half of the same problem: every two hours in real sun, and immediately after swimming, toweling off or heavy sweating, whatever number the tube shows. A high SPF buys a slightly wider margin for under-application and buys no extra hours, so treating 100 as a licence to skip the two hour mark is how people burn while wearing sunscreen. The last trade sits in texture, because the more elegant a formula feels, the more readily you apply too little of it.
Start at the back of the pack
Judging one starts with the back of the pack, not the front. Look for the words broad spectrum, then a water resistance figure in minutes if you plan to swim or sweat, then the filter list itself. A high SPF with no avobenzone or comparable long wave filter has thin UVA cover whatever the front says. Outside the United States the same brand may use newer filters such as bemotrizinol and bisoctrizole that hold up better in light. Two marks are worth recognizing. The European UVA in a circle means UVA protection reaches at least a third of the stated SPF. The Japanese PA rating runs PA+ through PA++++ on the same idea. Buy the real test at home. Spread a full quarter teaspoon on your face, stand at a window and look, because a gray cast only appears at the amount that protects. Then check that it layers without balling up over your moisturizer, since a sunscreen you fight with in the morning is one you will skip.
Heat splits a sunscreen
Storage decides how much protection survives to the beach. Heat splits an emulsion and degrades filters, so a bottle left in a car or lying in direct sun on the sand is finished ahead of its date, and a towel or a cool bag fixes that for free. Sunscreen carries a printed expiration date, and where one is missing, count three years from purchase and write the date on the bottle yourself. Shake mineral formulas before every use, as suspended particles settle toward the bottom and the last third of an unshaken bottle protects less than the first. Keep aerosols away from flames until the film is dry, since the propellant is flammable. Rinse zinc off swimwear promptly, and wash any fabric that catches avobenzone soon after, because that filter reacts with iron in water and leaves rust colored stains that set permanently.

Measure your face dose once so you stop guessing forever. Level a quarter teaspoon measure with sunscreen, spread it over face and neck, and note how it looks and feels, because that is the amount SPF testing assumes and almost nobody reaches by eye.
Size the bottle against the day you plan. One adult in swimwear needs about 30 milliliters per application. A 200 milliliter bottle holds roughly six, and a single beach day with reapplication every two hours consumes four of them for one person.
Judge the cast at working thickness rather than as a swatch on the back of a hand. Apply the full amount to your jaw and cheek, then look in daylight, since mineral filters read fine at swatch thickness and turn gray at the dose that actually works.
Slot it into the morning as the last step and set a timer for the rest. Fifteen minutes before you go out gives the film time to even out. A two hour phone alarm is the only reliable way most people reapply on schedule.
Test layering before you commit to a bottle. Apply your moisturizer, wait for it to sink in, then apply sunscreen and wait 60 seconds: rolling or pilling means the two formulas are fighting, and the usual fix is a lighter product underneath, not less sunscreen.
Match the format to the surface. A stick covers ears, nose and hairline where a lotion runs into eyes, a spray reaches a back you cannot otherwise get to. A lotion is the only one you can measure, so keep the lotion as the base layer.

Caring for sun care
Keep bottles out of hot cars and off open sand. Heat breaks the emulsion and degrades the filters, and a formula that no longer spreads as one even film stops delivering the number on the label whatever the date says.
Write the purchase date on anything without a printed expiration date and discard it after three years. Sunscreens are required to hold their strength for that long, not indefinitely. An old bottle fails silently with no change in smell or color.
Shake mineral formulas hard before every application. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are solid particles held in suspension, they settle toward the bottom between uses, and an unshaken bottle delivers uneven protection across its life.
Cap aerosols, wipe the nozzle, and keep spraying well away from grills, candles and cigarettes until skin is dry. The propellants are flammable while wet, and a blocked nozzle sprays a narrow jet that lays down far less product than the label assumes.
Skip decanting into travel pots. Transferring adds air and bacteria to a preserved formula. It separates the product from the expiration date and the water resistance figure printed on the original pack.
Rinse swimwear and wash towels soon after a sunscreen day. Zinc leaves white marks that grind into fabric, and avobenzone reacts with iron in tap water and pool water to leave rust orange stains that set permanently once dried in.

Common questions
Is SPF 100 twice as strong as SPF 50?
No. SPF 50 filters about 98 percent of UVB and SPF 100 about 99 percent, so the gap is roughly one percentage point. What a higher number really buys is a margin for applying too little. Neither one extends the two hour reapplication window, and both stop protecting after swimming or toweling off.
How much sunscreen do I actually need?
SPF is tested at 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. In practice that is about a quarter teaspoon for face and neck together, and about 30 milliliters, a shot glass, for a whole adult body in swimwear. Most people apply a quarter to a half of that, which is why a bottle labeled 50 often performs closer to 15.

UVA passes through cloud and ordinary window glass, and it is the wavelength behind most photoaging and pigment. If you sit beside a window all day or drive regularly, your face is getting a dose. A day spent entirely away from windows does not need it, so treat proximity to daylight as the trigger rather than the weather.
Is mineral sunscreen safer than chemical sunscreen?
Both are regulated, and neither has been shown to cause harm in normal use. Studies have measured several chemical filters in blood after heavy application, which prompted requests for more data rather than any finding of damage. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide stay on the surface, which suits reactive skin. Choose on cast, feel and whether you will actually wear it.
Water resistant for 80 minutes means I can skip reapplying after a swim, right?
No. Eighty minutes is the tested limit while immersed, not a guarantee afterward, and toweling dry removes the film regardless of how long you were in. Reapply as soon as you are out and dry. No sunscreen is waterproof, and any label claiming it would be breaking the rules in force since 2012.
Does self-tanner give any sun protection?
None. Self-tanner darkens dead surface cells through a reaction with DHA and offers no meaningful defense against ultraviolet light. So tanned looking skin burns exactly as fast as it did before. Sunscreen stays a separate product applied on top: broad spectrum, at the full amount, reapplied every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
Will daily sunscreen leave me short of vitamin D?
Trials of real world sunscreen use have not found deficiency, largely because nobody applies a perfect film to every patch of skin every day. Incidental exposure to hands and arms continues. If a blood test shows you are low, diet and a supplement solve it directly, and that conversation belongs with a doctor rather than with a sunscreen choice.
Does the SPF in my moisturizer or foundation count?
Barely. Both get spread thin and blended out. The film is a fraction of the tested thickness and the number on the pack is not the number on your face. Layering two SPF 20 products does not add up to 40 either. Treat them as a small bonus and apply a dedicated sunscreen underneath.
