Two products, one shelf
Two different products share one shelf and often one word. Deodorant goes after smell and leaves sweat volume alone, targeting the skin bacteria that turn fresh sweat into odor. Antiperspirant goes after volume, using aluminum salts to plug sweat ducts so less liquid reaches the surface. Sweat on its own barely smells. Apocrine glands in the underarm push out a milky fluid rich in protein and fat, and skin bacteria, mostly Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus species, break it into the sulfur compounds and short fatty acids you actually smell. In the United States the split is legal as well as chemical. Antiperspirants are over the counter drugs carrying a Drug Facts panel with the active and its percentage, and deodorants are cosmetics. Format cuts across both, so a stick, a gel, a roll-on, a spray or a jar of cream can be either one.
How each one works
Mechanism explains almost every complaint about this aisle. An aluminum salt such as aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex GLY dissolves in moisture at a duct opening, hydrolyzes, and forms a soft gel that corks the top few cells of that duct. That plug lives in the outermost skin, so it wears off with cell turnover over several days rather than rinsing out in a shower. Federal rules cap those salts at 25 percent for chlorohydrate types and 20 percent for zirconium ones, and nothing may be called an antiperspirant unless testing shows a 20 percent sweat cut, with 30 percent needed for an extra effective claim. What surrounds the salt sets the feel. Stearyl alcohol wax builds a solid stick, so it goes on dry and leaves a pale film on dark fabric. Water and glycol build a clear gel, which shows nothing and stays wet for two to five minutes. Propellant and volatile silicone build an aerosol that flashes off in seconds and puts less active on skin per pass. Deodorant actives run on other chemistry: ethanol kills bacteria briefly and evaporates, triethyl citrate splits on skin into citric acid and lowers surface pH, zinc ricinoleate traps odor molecules rather than killing them, and sodium bicarbonate pushes pH near 9, which bacteria dislike and plenty of skin dislikes too.
