You are working on dead tissue

Everything on this shelf acts on a structure that is already dead. The nail plate, the hard part you paint, is compressed keratin pushed out by the matrix, a pocket of living cells tucked under the skin at the base of the nail. A cell that has left the matrix never grows again. That one fact sorts the whole category. Nail Polish, Gel Polish and Press-On Nails coat the plate. Files and Clippers cut and abrade it. Removers dissolve whatever you put on it. Treatments and Strengtheners change how a coating behaves on top of it. Only Cuticle Oils and Creams reach living tissue, which is why they are the slow entry on a shelf full of fast ones.

How it sets decides how it leaves

How a product sets decides both its wear time and the way it has to come off. The aisle runs on only three mechanisms. Ordinary polish is a film former, usually nitrocellulose, dissolved in quick solvents. The solvent leaves, the film stays, and it keeps hardening for hours after it feels dry. Gel skips evaporation entirely. It carries photoinitiators, molecules that fire when a specific wavelength hits them, so a lamp running roughly 365 to 405 nanometers cross links a coat into solid plastic in 30 to 60 seconds. Adhesive is the third route, holding a molded tip rather than building a film. Underneath all three sits a plate of roughly a hundred flattened cell layers that behaves like a sponge. It takes on water far faster than skin does, swells, then shrinks as it dries. Thousands of those cycles are what split a tip into flakes. Failures follow the same physics: water creeps in at the free edge, the strip of nail overhanging your fingertip, and lifts a coating from below.

Choose by the week you have

Choose by the week you actually have. Anyone changing color often, working in food handling or clinical care, or unwilling to spend more than fifteen minutes belongs with ordinary polish, which goes on after dinner and comes off the same night. Gel earns its lamp when nothing may chip for three weeks: long shifts, a holiday, a wedding party. Press-ons suit a fixed date and a nail that will not grow past the fingertip, since the length arrives already shaped. Weak, flaking nails need the dull answer before any of it. This is daily oil and a file that cuts rather than tears, because no coating repairs a plate splitting from water. Children do best in peel off water based polish, which needs no solvent at all. Toes run on their own clock. A toenail grows near 1 mm a month against 3 mm on a finger, so damage there is a year long project.

Wear time is paid at removal

Wear time is bought with removal, one for one. Three days of polish wipes off in a minute, three weeks of gel costs a fifteen minute acetone soak, and skipping that soak is what actually thins nails. Lamps carry a second cost worth stating plainly: they emit UVA, the band that ages skin, so sunscreen on the backs of the hands or fingerless UV gloves before curing is a reasonable precaution. A third cost gets almost no shelf space. Uncured gel sitting against skin can sensitize you to acrylates. That allergy is permanent once it starts, surfacing later as itching around the nail fold or a reaction to dental and medical adhesives. Under curing is the cause: coats laid too thick, a lamp that does not match the product, or bulbs that have dimmed. Wipe stray gel off skin before the lamp goes on, every time.

Judge the brush before the color

Judge polish by the brush before the color. A wide flat brush that fans across the nail covers it in three strokes, while a thin round one needs six and leaves ridges. Decent pigment reaches near full opacity by the second coat. A bottle demanding four coats will chip on schedule no matter how you seal it. Read the ingredient list instead of the front label, since free from counts such as 3 free and 10 free carry no legal definition. The names worth finding for yourself are toluene, formaldehyde and its resin, and dibutyl phthalate. Buy a gel and its lamp as a pair, because a lamp built around one wavelength under cures a gel formulated for another. Treat the lamp as a consumable too: a set that suddenly stays tacky usually points at tired bulbs rather than at the gel.

Keeping water and force away

Keeping nails is mostly keeping water and force away from them. Gloves for washing up and cleaning do more than any bottle labeled strengthener, since detergent strips the fats holding keratin layers together and warm water swells the plate. Oil the fold at the base twice a day, since the nail being built right now arrives in six months. Stop opening boxes and prying lids with your fingertips, because most breaks begin as a knock at one corner. Leave a bare week between gel sets and keep buffing occasional rather than routine. Some changes are not cosmetic: a dark stripe that widens or spreads onto surrounding skin, a nail lifting away from its bed, thick crumbling toenails, or new pitting belong with a doctor rather than a top coat.

  • Press a fingertip down on a table and watch the white free edge. Any visible flex means the length has outrun the thickness of your plate, and a break is coming whatever you coat it with. Most hands stop flexing somewhere around 3 to 4 mm of white.
  • Look at where your nail leaves the skin and copy that outline. Side walls running parallel take a square tip cleanly. Meanwhile, a nail that narrows toward the end wears far better filed to a soft oval, because a square corner on a narrow nail has no plate underneath holding it.
  • Run a freshly filed nail down a knit sleeve or a pair of tights. A snag says the corners are sharp enough to catch on fabric. Two or three strokes to round them prevents the tears that start at a side wall.
  • Paint one nail and judge it at arm's length in daylight, not up close under bathroom lighting. Blue based reds, fuchsia and cool berries settle on hands with a pink cast, while orange reds, coral and warm brown look intentional on hands that lean yellow or olive.
  • Try lifting a flake at the tip with your thumbnail before you buy anything. If layers separate, the plate is water damaged. Gloves and oil come first and Treatments and Strengtheners or a fresh gel set will only lock the damage in.
  • Lay your hand flat inside a curing lamp and check that every fingertip sits fully in the light. Thumbs nearly always need a separate pass, and a curled hand leaves the band nearest the base tacky. This is exactly the uncured state that irritates skin.

Caring for nail care

  • Stand polish bottles upright in a cool dark drawer rather than on a bathroom shelf, because heat and daylight thicken the film former and push the color off tone within months.
  • Roll a bottle between your palms instead of shaking it, since shaking beats air into the lacquer and those bubbles surface as small craters as the coat levels out.
  • Wipe the neck and the screw threads with a little remover before capping, as dried lacquer there breaks the seal, lets solvent escape and turns the bottle stringy long before you have used it up.
  • Count an opened polish as good for about a year to eighteen months and an unopened one for roughly two years, then throw out any bottle that separates into layers and refuses to remix after a minute of rolling.
  • Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning, then oil afterward, because detergent strips the fats between keratin layers and warm water is the single biggest cause of soft, peeling plates.
  • Keep the inside of a curing lamp clean and change its bulbs on the maker's schedule, since dim bulbs leave a set tacky and under cured. That is the state most likely to sensitize the skin around your nails.

Common questions

Why do my nails peel into layers at the tip?
Water is the usual culprit. The plate absorbs water, swells, then shrinks again as it dries. Repeated cycles separate the keratin layers at their thinnest point, which is the tip. Gloves for washing up, oil twice a day and a file used in one direction clear most cases within a few months. A single nail peeling on its own is worth showing to a doctor.
Are gel curing lamps safe for my hands?
They emit UVA, the band that ages skin, in bursts of 30 to 60 seconds a few times per set. Research has not settled how much risk that adds, so the answer is small but not zero. Sunscreen on the backs of the hands twenty minutes beforehand, or fingerless UV gloves, removes the question cheaply.
Do nails need to breathe between manicures?
No. The plate is dead keratin with no blood supply and no way to use air, and everything living underneath is fed from below. Gaps between sets still help, for a different reason. They let a plate thinned by buffing and acetone grow out, and they give the skin around it time to settle.
What is the difference between gel and acrylic?
Acrylic hardens through a reaction between a liquid monomer and a polymer powder, needs no lamp, sets rigid and has to be filed off or soaked for far longer. Gel cures under a lamp in under a minute, keeps a little flex, and soaks off in about fifteen minutes. Acrylic builds length and strength, while gel mainly supplies color and gloss.
Why did dark polish stain my nails yellow?
Pigment migrates out of the color coat into the top layers of keratin, and reds, deep blues and glitters do it fastest. A base coat prevents it, which is the main reason base coats exist. Stains already there grow out over three to six months. Yellowing that arrives with thickening, crumbling or an odor is a different problem and needs a doctor.
What causes white spots on nails?
Small knocks to the matrix under the skin at the base, usually weeks before the spot became visible. Cells trap tiny pockets of air as they harden, and those pockets scatter light and read as white. Calcium has nothing to do with it, despite the folklore. The marks grow out on their own, so the only fix is gentler hands.
Can anything make nails grow faster?
Not reliably from a bottle. Fingernails move about 3 mm a month. The rate is set by age, circulation and general health rather than by anything painted on top. Biotin supplements show clear results only in people who are really deficient, which a doctor can test for. Warmth and massage help slightly by lifting blood flow to the matrix.
Why does my gel lift near the base after a week?
Preparation, almost every time. Oil left on the plate stops gel gripping it, so a wipe with rubbing alcohol comes first. Gel touching the surrounding skin causes the rest: skin moves, the seal breaks, and lifting spreads from that point. Leave a hairline gap of about 1 mm at the base and the same beside each side wall.
