Mineral sunscreen builds its protection from two solid ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, allowed up to 25 percent each. Both stay on the surface as a film of particles rather than dissolving into a clear layer. The common description has them bouncing light away like a mirror, and that oversells it. They absorb most of the ultraviolet that reaches them and scatter the remainder. This is precisely why they show white on skin.
Coverage between the two is not equal. Zinc oxide protects across UVB and the full UVA range, so it delivers broad spectrum on its own. Titanium dioxide is stronger against UVB and weaker at long wave UVA, which means a formula built on titanium alone leans on the rest of its filter list. Particle size sets appearance. Finely milled grades cut the cast without penetrating intact skin, and coated particles stop the two minerals reacting with other ingredients in the jar.
Chemical Sunscreen is the direct alternative, invisible and thinner but reliant on light stable combinations to hold up. Face Sunscreen and Body Sunscreen simply say where a formula goes, and either can be mineral. Sunscreen Stick is nearly always mineral or mineral heavy, since the wax base suits particles well.
Reactive skin, rosacea, eczema and skin fresh from a dermatologist's procedure do well here, because nothing needs absorbing to work. Children over six months are usually put on mineral formulas for the same reason. Protection is live as soon as the film dries rather than after a settling period, which suits anyone who forgets the 15 minute head start. Deeper skin tones should try tinted versions, since untinted zinc at working thickness reads gray.
Look for zinc oxide named on the ingredient list if UVA cover matters to you, and shake the bottle every time, since solid particles settle. Rub in properly, as a mineral film sits where you left it and a missed streak burns in a stripe. Expect it to shift more readily on sweat, reapply after toweling, and rinse it off swimwear quickly because zinc grinds white marks into fabric.
