The basics
What to know about hair extensions & wigs
Two families, one shelf
Added hair splits into two families that share a shelf and almost nothing else. Extensions use your own growing hair as an anchor and add length or thickness to it, so your hairline, your part and your roots all stay on show. A wig covers the whole head and replaces what is there. A topper sits between them, clipped to the crown with your sides and back left as your own. Strip the marketing and each is fiber fixed to a base: an inch of adhesive tab, a fabric strip called a weft, or a full cap. None of it grows, heals or receives oil from your scalp, and that fact drives every care rule below.
Human hair or synthetic
Fiber decides what a piece can survive. Human hair behaves like the hair on your head, so heat tools shape it, dye deposits onto it, and it drops back into place after rain. Remy is the grade worth knowing, meaning every strand was gathered with its root end facing the same way. The cuticle scales lie in one direction and strands slide instead of locking. Hair sold without that alignment is acid stripped and silicone coated. That is why it looks flawless in the box and mats from the ends up around week six. Synthetic fiber is plastic, usually modacrylic, extruded with a wave heat set into it. Permanence cuts both ways. The set survives humidity that drops a human hair curl by lunchtime, and standard fiber melts near 300 degrees Fahrenheit into a lump no wash reverses.
What the cap costs
Base construction is what price actually buys. A machine wefted cap is rows of sewn strips on stretch fabric: strong, airy, cheap, and unable to show a convincing part, because you see the weft where scalp should be. Lace solves that: knotting single strands by hand into fine mesh lets light through so the mesh reads as skin, and how much lace you get is the whole product ladder. Density is the other label number. Your own head sits near 100 to 120 percent, most caps ship at 130 percent. 180 percent is why cheap wigs look like wigs. Attachment forms its own scale. Clips grip for hours, tape tabs and sewn wefts hold six to eight weeks, keratin bonds run three to four months. A halo hangs on a wire and grips nothing.
How much of your own hair
Route yourself by how much of your own hair you have and how much upkeep you will tolerate. Fine hair thinning at the part suits a topper or a halo, since both spread the load and neither pulls at the temples. Someone who wants long hair twice a month wants clip-ins, because the piece is off your head 23 hours out of 24. Length you will swim in, sleep in and wash normally is the case for tape-ins or a sew-in, at a salon visit every six to eight weeks. Alopecia and chemotherapy regrowth point at a wig, where adjustable straps and silicone strips hold a cap on a scalp with nothing to grip. Under about three inches of your own hair, no clip, tab or bond can hide, so a wig is the only piece that works.
The trade that outranks money
One trade-off outranks money here. Constant pull on a follicle causes traction alopecia, which means hair loss from tension, which starts at the temples and nape and turns permanent once the follicle scars. Early signs get ignored daily: a headache the evening of an install, soreness at the roots, small bumps around the attachment points, and a fringe of short broken hairs along the front. If a style hurts, it is too tight, and loosening it that day is the only response. Lesser trades sit underneath. Realism costs durability, since hand tied lace is the most convincing and the most fragile part of any cap. Human hair costs four to ten times synthetic and wants styling every morning. Synthetic holds its shape for free and cannot be restyled at all.
Four checks on a piece
Four checks separate a good piece from a bad one. Run your fingers up the hair from the ends toward the base. Aligned Remy feels smooth in both directions, while coated hair grips going up and warns you it will mat by week eight. Study the parting under a bright light from an angle, where a weak cap gives itself away. Bleached knots read as scalp, dark knots read as dots. Grams are the only measure of thickness on a clip-in set: 100 to 120 disappears into fine hair, while thick hair needs 160 to 220. Check color in daylight against your mid lengths rather than your roots, and go a shade darker than you think, since human hair takes a deposit and cannot safely be lifted.
Counted in wears, not months
Lifespan runs on wear count rather than the calendar. Wash a wig every 8 to 15 wears in cool water, stroking downward instead of piling it up and scrubbing, because a tangle knotted into a cap never combs out the way one on a head does. Condition the lengths only and keep oil off tape tabs and bonds, since adhesive dissolves on contact and a tab slides loose within days. Detangle dry, from the ends upward, with a loop brush or a wide tooth comb, and never brush wet synthetic. Store on a stand or in its net, since a cap loose in a drawer flattens and mats where it folds.
Buyer checklist
Before you buy hair extensions & wigs
Choose beauty products by purpose, ingredients and how your skin or hair responds, not by promises on the front of the pack.
01
Read the ingredient list
Check known sensitivities and the product's intended use. Marketing terms are not a substitute for the full label.
02
Patch test when appropriate
Introduce unfamiliar formulas cautiously and stop using a product if irritation develops. Seek professional advice for persistent reactions.
03
Check packaging and freshness
Look for an intact seal, batch information and any period-after-opening or expiry guidance. Heat and sunlight can shorten product life.
04
Buy from a traceable seller
A clear seller identity, return process and intact labeling are especially important for products used on skin, eyes or lips.
Run a soft tape around your head from the front hairline, over the top of each ear and around the nape. 21.5 inches lands in an average cap, below 21 inches needs a petite and above 22.5 inches needs a large, and the elastic straps inside adjust by roughly an inch and no further.
Set a cap so its front edge lands about half an inch behind your own hairline, then raise your eyebrows hard. Movement means the fit is loose or the cap sits too far forward, while a band of pressure across the forehead inside ten minutes means you are a size down from where you should be.
Gather a section of your own hair into a ponytail and compare its thickness against the piece you are considering. Anything much fuller reads as fake from six feet away. So 130 percent density suits most people and 180 percent suits almost nobody.
Judge length against your own body, not against a number on a label. Extensions are measured straight from the weft. A 20 inch curly set hangs 2 to 4 inches shorter once it dries. 18 inches usually reaches the bra strap on an average height adult.
Weigh a clip-in set before you judge how it looks. Fine hair blends at 100 to 120 grams, thick hair needs 160 to 220 grams. Buying heavier than your own hair requires shows up as neck ache by evening rather than as better hair.
Two hours after any semi permanent install, push your fingertips against your scalp and try to move it. It should slide. Tenting at the roots, stinging or a headache means the tension is high enough to damage follicles. The fix is loosening it the same day.
Care
Caring for hair extensions & wigs
Wash on a wear count rather than a schedule, roughly every 8 to 15 wears. No oil reaches this hair from a scalp, so it only picks up product and sweat, and every extra wash loosens hand tied knots that cannot be replaced.
Use cool water and stroke conditioner downward through the lengths instead of piling the hair up and scrubbing it. Nothing holds these fibers but a knot or a stitch. A tangle worked into a cap stays there, and a matted crown ends the piece.
Keep oil, silicone serum and rich conditioner off tape tabs, keratin bonds and any glued lace at the hairline. Adhesive dissolves in oil, which is how a tab slides free within a few days and a lace edge lifts by mid morning.
Detangle dry, starting at the ends and moving up in one inch steps with a loop brush or a wide tooth comb. Wet fiber has no elasticity left to give, and brushing synthetic while it is wet drags the heat set curl out for good.
Park a wig on a stand or back in its net between wears rather than loose in a drawer. Weight resting on the crown flattens the fiber and folds mat where the cap creases. A solid head form stretches an elastic cap a size larger over a few months.
Book a break of two to four weeks between semi permanent installs and move the attachment points every time. Follicles under constant tension shed first and scar later, and traction alopecia at the temples does not grow back once that happens.
Questions
Common questions
Will hair extensions damage my own hair?
Clips do not, as long as you take them out at night and move their placement around. Tension is the real risk, because tape, bonds and sew-in wefts hang weight from live follicles for weeks at a time. Sustained pull causes traction alopecia at the temples and nape. Soreness, small bumps or short broken hairs along the hairline mean loosen or remove it now, since scarred follicles never regrow.
How long do extensions and wigs last?
Clip-in human hair runs 6 to 12 months on regular wear, tape-ins get reused two or three times with fresh adhesive. Keratin bonds hold three to four months before growth moves them too far down. Wigs split by fiber: 4 to 6 months for synthetic worn daily, a year or more for human hair. Every one of those numbers roughly halves under daily heat styling.
Can I use a straightener on a synthetic wig?
Only on fiber sold as heat friendly, and only below about 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Standard modacrylic melts near 300 degrees, and the damage arrives instantly and permanently because the fiber fuses rather than scorching. Test a hidden section at the nape first. A garment steamer resets most synthetic waves more safely than any iron does.
What does Remy mean, and is it worth the extra money?
Remy hair was gathered with every root pointing the same way. The cuticle scales lie in one direction and strands slide instead of locking together. Yes, pay for it on anything you plan to keep past two months. Cheaper hair lacks that alignment, so it is acid stripped and silicone coated, looks identical in the packet. Mats from the ends once the coating washes off around week six.
How do I stop a lace front from looking obvious?
Three moves do most of the work. Tint the lace toward your own scalp tone, since lace lighter than your skin is the giveaway in daylight. Choose bleached knots, which read as scalp instead of as dots. Then thin the hairline with tweezers, because factory hairlines carry far more hair than a real one. Plucking cannot be undone, so remove five hairs, look, repeat.
Can I sleep in extensions?
Not clip-ins. Eight hours of pressure from one clip on the same section builds small bald patches over months. The tangling is worse than any wash undoes. Tape-ins, bonds and sew-in wefts are built to sleep in. They still want help: braid the length loosely or tie a low ponytail, and switch to a silk or satin pillowcase, since cotton friction is where overnight matting starts.
How much of my own hair do I need for extensions to work?
About three to four inches at minimum, since anything shorter cannot cover a clip, a tape tab or a bond. Blending matters as much as covering: hair more than double your current length leaves a visible step where your own ends stop. Chin length hair takes 14 to 16 inches convincingly and rarely more. A wig needs no hair underneath at all.
Can I dye a wig or a set of extensions?
Human hair takes a color deposit going darker. It takes it unevenly if the hair was already processed, so test a spare weft first. Lifting to a lighter shade is a stylist's job and often ends in straw. Synthetic fiber accepts no dye whatsoever, since it has no cuticle for color to enter. Buy the shade you want and match it to your mid lengths.
