Women's Shirt Dress

Buttons running the full length are what make this a shirt dress. The garment takes the parts of a collared shirt, the collar and its stand, the placket carrying the buttons, the cuffs and the shoulder yoke, then continues the body past the hip to knee, calf or ankle. Because the front opens the whole way down, the same piece closes as a dress or hangs open as a light layer over jeans.

A shirt has no waist shaping of its own, so a shirt dress borrows one from a belt, a drawstring or a row of darts at the back. Cinch the belt and it reads as an hourglass; drop the belt and the same cloth falls as a straight column. Cloth decides how sharp the result looks, since cotton poplin, a tight plain weave, holds the collar upright and the placket flat. In contrast, viscose drapes softly and lets the collar lie down. Placket stress is the built-in weakness, because every button is a single point holding two panels together across your bust.

Compare it with a sundress and you are trading air for structure, as a placket, a collar and often a lining are three layers a summer cotton does without. Jacket dresses reach further into tailoring with shoulder padding and interlining, which this style deliberately skips. Against a tunic the difference is length and intent, since a tunic stops mid-thigh and expects leggings underneath while this stands alone. A t-shirt dress covers similar casual ground with nothing to fasten and no way to adjust the waist.

Smart casual offices accept it at knee or midi length in a mid-weight cotton. Travel days go far on one garment, because a change of belt and shoe moves it from morning to evening. Fuller busts should size to the chest and have the waist taken in, since the placket fails before anything else does. Anyone who dislikes fussing will find the belt slipping out of its loops and the collar asking for an iron.

Take a chair in the fitting room and watch the two buttons nearest your bust, because a gap that appears seated is the gap other people see. Count the buttons below the hip, since a skirt held by only two will walk open on the stairs. Collar stands and cuffs should feel firm rather than floppy, which tells you the interfacing, the stiffening layer fused inside, is doing its job. Fasten every button before washing so the buttonholes are not dragged sideways in the drum, then hang it damp so the placket dries flat.
