Also called: fit and flare, skater dress

The basics

What to know about fit & flare

Fit and flare joins two opposed shapes at one seam: a bodice fitted through bust and waist, then a skirt with real volume released exactly at the waistline. Where an A-line eases outward, fit and flare breaks outward, and that sharp contrast makes the waist the focal point of the entire dress.

The skirt carries the character. Circle skirts, cut as a ring of fabric so the hem is many times the waist measure, swing widest; gathered and pleated versions hold closer. Volume needs support to keep its shape. Below roughly knee length a full skirt stands on its own drape. Longer versions want a petticoat, the stiff underskirt that props the flare, or they deflate. Movement is the reward; the skirt turns and swings a step behind you, which is why the shape owns dance floors and photographs.

The waist seam is also the constraint. It must land on your natural waist, the narrowest point of the torso, or the whole geometry misfires. A seam that rides an inch high shortens the bodice and pinches, and an inch low erases the contrast. Petite and tall cuts exist for exactly this reason, so match the bodice length before judging anything else.

Best for

When it works well

  • Waist-first dressing is the point, because the seam and the flare aim every eye at it.
  • Parties, dances and weddings suit the skirt, since it moves with a life the other silhouettes lack.
  • Fuller hips and thighs clear easily, as the flare passes both without measuring them.
  • Vintage registers come built in, because the shape carries its fifties lineage openly.
