All-in-One Washer-Dryer (Washing Machines)

One drum that washes and then dries the same load.

Also called: washer-dryer combo, combination washer-dryer

The basics

What to know about All-in-One Washer-Dryer (Washing Machines)

An All-in-One Washer-Dryer washes and dries in the same horizontal drum without moving the load. After the wash and spin phases, a ventless drying system removes moisture by condensation or heat-pump operation according to the model. One cabinet, one door and often one standard laundry footprint replace a separate pair. The machine can run a complete unattended sequence. But drying capacity may be lower than washing capacity and a full process can take many hours.

A Compact Washer with a separate dryer occupies more vertical or side-by-side space yet allows simultaneous washing and drying. A Front-Load Washer paired with a vented dryer usually handles larger loads faster. The combo is not a stacked pair hidden in one cabinet; it has one drum and cannot begin another wash while drying. Heat-pump versions may reduce energy and fabric temperature compared with basic condensing designs, though cycle behavior and maintenance remain model-specific.

Studios, accessory units, boats or homes with no safe dryer vent can benefit when laundry volume is modest. It also helps someone who wants to start one small load and return after both stages. Avoid it for large families, rapid back-to-back loads or bulky items that fill the drum during washing but need more space to tumble dry. A failure stops both functions. Users must be comfortable planning around long cycles and removing some items before drying when the stated capacities differ.

Compare wash and dry capacities separately, complete-cycle time, moisture remaining, energy and water use, lint-management design and service access. Confirm drain, power, water and room ventilation requirements from the exact installation guide. Check whether dry-only operation, delayed start and sensor modes are practical. An accessible pump filter and condenser or heat-exchange cleaning path matter. Local technicians and parts are especially important because the combined refrigeration, heating, pumping and wash systems share one dense cabinet.

Load to the lower drying limit when running a continuous cycle, dose the specified detergent carefully and remove lint from every accessible filter on schedule. Ventilate the door gasket, clean the pump filter and run maintenance cycles as directed. Leave space around the cabinet for cooling and service, and never cover ventilation in a closet. Inspect hoses, drains and seals for leaks. If drying time rises, check filters, condenser paths, load size and spin performance before assuming a heater failure.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Small households with room for one cabinet and no practical dryer vent.
  • Unattended wash-to-dry cycles for modest loads that fit the dry capacity.
  • Studios and accessory units where separate appliances cannot fit.
  • Users who value space savings more than rapid consecutive loads.
