What to know about UV-C Air Purifier
A UV-C purifier places a lamp emitting light near 254 nanometers inside the airstream, where the energy damages the genetic material of bacteria, mold spores and viruses that pass by. Effectiveness rests on dose, which is lamp intensity multiplied by exposure time. Inside a consumer box, air crosses the lamp chamber in a fraction of a second, so the dose delivered is frequently a small fraction of what published inactivation figures assume.
Weigh it against the alternatives. A Portable HEPA Air Purifier removes the whole organism from the air along with the dust it rode in on. A Combination HEPA and Carbon Purifier adds gas control. A UV stage removes nothing: an inactivated mold spore is still a protein floating in the room, and allergy sufferers react to that protein whether or not it can still grow. For allergies, the lamp changes nothing at all.
Photocatalytic oxidation, sold as PCO, coats a surface in titanium dioxide and lights it with UV to break down gases. Complete oxidation would give carbon dioxide and water; incomplete oxidation, which is what usually happens at room conditions, can release formaldehyde and acetaldehyde instead. UV light also embrittles plastics and degrades filter media placed too close to the lamp. Lamp placement inside the housing matters more than lamp wattage on the box.
Where germicidal UV has strong evidence, it looks nothing like a plug in appliance: upper room fixtures mounted above head height with louvers that confine the beam to the ceiling zone, designed by an engineer, paired with ceiling fans to keep air circulating through the treated layer. Lamps lose 15 to 30 percent of their output in the first year and need annual replacement whether or not they still glow, since visible light is not the germicidal part. Never look at an operating lamp or run one with the housing open, because UV-C burns the cornea and skin within seconds. Buy the machine for its HEPA and carbon performance, then treat any UV stage as a bonus rather than a reason.
