Portable HEPA Air Purifier

A portable HEPA purifier is the plainest form of the idea: a fan, a pleated mat of very fine glass fibers, and a gasket that forces every cubic foot through the media instead of around it. Pleating makes the format possible, folding 5 to 10 square feet of filter into a cartridge a foot tall so the fan can push air through without meeting a wall of resistance. Grading follows either the US figure of 99.97 percent capture at 0.3 micrometers or the European EN 1822 classes H13 and H14.

Set it beside its neighbors and the differences are clear. A Combination HEPA and Carbon Purifier adds a gas stage inside the same housing and gives up a little airflow for it. An Activated Carbon Air Purifier reverses the priorities and builds around a deep carbon bed. An Electrostatic Precipitator swaps filter purchases for plate washing and loses efficiency between washes. An Ionizing Air Purifier drops particles onto your furniture rather than removing them. Among all of these, the mechanical unit has the least interesting mechanism and the most predictable result.

Choose this format when particles are the whole problem: pollen, dander, dust mite debris, wildfire smoke, road soot. Match smoke CADR to two thirds of the floor area, so a 200 square foot bedroom wants about 135 CFM and a 400 square foot living room wants 270 CFM. Odors and solvent fumes sit outside its reach completely, and a room whose door stays open effectively becomes the larger space it opens into.

Look for an independently verified CADR label, which means a lab measured the machine rather than the marketing department. Read the decibel figure at the speed that delivers the CADR you need, not at speed one, because most quoted sound levels come from the quietest setting. Press around the filter seat and feel for a genuine gasket, since air always takes the easier path. Price two years of cartridges before you commit, then rinse or vacuum the pre-filter every two to four weeks and change the HEPA at 6 to 12 months. Give the intake 12 to 24 inches of clear space, because a unit wedged behind a chair breathes its own clean output and reads its own sensor wrong.
