What to know about Ionizing Air Purifier
An ionizing purifier emits streams of electrically charged ions into the room. Particles pick up that charge, attract each other, grow heavier and drop out of the air onto floors, walls and furniture. Air quality readings can really improve for a while, because a meter samples the air and the dust is no longer in it. The dust has not left the room, though. Walking across the carpet or sitting down on the sofa returns a share of it to the air you breathe.
Compare that with the alternatives honestly. A Portable HEPA Air Purifier physically removes particles into a cartridge you throw away. An Electrostatic Precipitator at least keeps what it charges, on plates inside the machine. A Combination HEPA and Carbon Purifier deals with particles and gases in one pass. Ionizers publish no meaningful CADR because they move very little air. So coverage claims for them are stated in square feet rather than in cubic feet per minute.
Byproducts are the more serious issue. Ion and plasma devices can emit ozone, a lung irritant that inflames airways and worsens asthma at concentrations well below anything that would clean a room. Ozone reacting with terpenes, the scent molecules in citrus cleaners and pine products, forms formaldehyde and other aldehydes indoors. Some devices also generate ultrafine particles of their own. California limits ozone output from air cleaners to 0.05 parts per million and requires certified units for sale in the state. Other countries handle it differently, so verify locally.
Ozone generators sold for remediation belong to a different job entirely. Restoration crews use them in empty buildings after a fire or flood, then ventilate for hours before anyone returns. No version of that is safe in an occupied bedroom. Evidence for bipolar ionization in occupied buildings remains thin and contested, with independent testing often failing to reproduce the manufacturer results. If a purifier you like happens to include an ion switch, leave it off. The filter is doing the work.
