Judge by bed depth and mass rather than by the word carbon on the box: half an inch of granules is a working minimum, and a serious unit carries 1 to 4 kilograms in a sealed frame. Nothing tells you when it is full, so replace every 3 to 6 months in active use and sooner during a paint job. Heat drives molecules back off a saturated bed, which is why an old filter in a warm room can smell worse than no filter. Store spare cartridges in their sealed bag, because carbon starts adsorbing the moment you open it. One caveat outranks all of this: for gases, ventilation and removing the source beat filtration every time.
