What to know about Electrostatic Precipitator (Air Purifiers)
An electrostatic precipitator gives particles an electrical charge as they enter, then pulls them onto a stack of closely spaced metal plates held at the opposite charge. Ionizing wires running at several kilovolts do the charging, and the plates do the collecting. Because nothing is strained through fibers, resistance to airflow stays low and there is no cartridge to purchase. That last point is the entire sales pitch, and it is genuine as far as it goes.
A Portable HEPA Air Purifier holds its rated efficiency from the first day to the last and then asks for money. This format asks for labor instead. A Whole-House Air Cleaner can occupy the same duct position with pleated media and no electrical section. An Ionizing Air Purifier uses similar charging hardware but provides no plates, so the particles land on your walls rather than inside the machine.
Performance is the catch, and it is not small. Collection starts high on clean plates and falls sharply as they load, with meaningful decline inside two to four weeks in a normal home. Averaged across a cleaning cycle, real world capture often sits well below the headline figure and below what a mechanical filter delivers on its worst day. Corona discharge from the ionizing section also produces some ozone. California caps air cleaner ozone output at 0.05 parts per million and requires certification for sale there. Rules differ by country, so check before ordering.
Choose one where dirt loads are heavy and maintenance is realistic: a workshop, a garage, a duct mounted position someone actually services. Washing means sliding the cell out, soaking or rinsing the plates, and drying them fully before power returns, every two to four weeks. Occasional snapping noises are normal as collected particles arc across the plates, but continuous arcing means the cell needs cleaning. For a bedroom, a sealed mechanical unit gives steadier results with less of your time.
