What to know about Flap Bucket
A flap bucket keeps the round base and gathered cord of the standard shape, then folds a panel of leather over the whole top and fastens it, usually with a magnetic snap or a turnlock, the rotating metal catch you twist a quarter turn. The flap is not decoration. It exists to solve the one genuine weakness of the silhouette.
Because that flap has to reach across a top whose width changes as the cord loosens, makers cut it generously and anchor it low on the back panel, well below the rim. Close the flap on a full bag before buying, not an empty one. It should reach and fasten without being forced. The flap edge needs finishing on both faces, since the underside shows every time the bag is open. Feed the leather along the flap fold once a year, as that line flexes on every use and dries out well before the rest of the bag does.
