Sew-In Wefts (Hair Extensions & Wigs)

Stitches wefts onto cornrowed braids with a curved needle, holding for six to eight weeks at a time.

Also called: weave, sew-in weave, braided install

The basics

What to know about Sew-In Wefts (Hair Extensions & Wigs)

A sew-in begins with your own hair braided flat to the scalp in cornrows, and those braids become the anchor. Wefts, the fabric strips with hair sewn along one edge, are then stitched onto the braids with a curved needle and thread. No adhesive is involved anywhere and nothing bonds to individual strands. The hold comes entirely from the stitching and the braid pattern beneath it.

That braid pattern decides both the look and the risk. Rows laid horizontally let wefts sit flat and keep the tracks hidden. The tension used while braiding decides whether the install is comfortable or damaging. Load spreads across a whole braid rather than a few strands, which is why this method carries a lot of hair without slipping. Six to eight weeks is the ceiling, because new growth beyond that loosens the braids, the wefts start to swing, and the hair underneath begins to lock and shed.

Clip-ins run identical wefts on hardware with no braiding at all. Tape-in extensions sit flatter and suit finer hair, since a tab has no bulk while a stitched track does. A full lace wig is the tension free answer for anyone whose scalp has already reacted badly, because a wig goes on over a braided base and comes off at night. Halo extensions solve the same problem with far less commitment and much less hair.

Coarse, dense and textured hair suits this best, since the braids hold well and the scalp can carry the weight. Practical reasons stack up too: adding a lot of hair in one sitting, tucking your own ends away for weeks as protective styling, and keeping length through a gym schedule. Fine or already thinning hair should stay away, and so should any scalp still sore from the last install.

Judge an install two hours in: your scalp should slide under your fingertips and nothing should sting. Braids tight enough to lift the skin around the hairline are the well worn path to traction alopecia. Wash between the tracks every one to two weeks with a bottle you can aim at the roots, dry the braids fully, and treat a smell or a persistent itch as a signal to take it down. Leave four weeks between installs and change the braid pattern each time.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Coarse and textured hair, where cornrows hold securely and the scalp carries the weight comfortably.
  • Protective styling, since your own lengths and ends stay tucked away and untouched for weeks.
  • Adding a large amount of hair at once, which no clip or tab method matches for volume.
  • Active schedules, because nothing loosens in a pool or a gym the way adhesive does.

Style comparison

Sew-In Wefts (Hair Extensions & Wigs) vs similar hair extensions & wigs

  • Tape-In Extensions

Sandwiches a slice of your hair between two adhesive tabs, lying flat enough to hide under fine hair.

  • Halo Extensions

Rests on a clear wire under your crown hair, adding length with no pull on a single follicle.

  • Clip-In Extensions

Clips onto your own hair in the morning and comes off at night, which is why it does the least damage.
