Tape-In Extensions

Tape-ins arrive as small wefts roughly one to one and a half inches wide, each backed with a strip of medical grade adhesive. A stylist takes a paper thin slice of your hair, lays one tab underneath it and presses a second tab down on top, sealing your own hair between the two. Each sandwich weighs a couple of grams and lies flush against the head.

Flatness explains where this format wins. A tab carries no knot and no bulk, so it hides under hair too fine to conceal a bead or a fused bond, and it spreads its load across a wide slice instead of pulling on a handful of strands. Timing is the catch. Hair grows about half an inch a month. By week six to eight the tabs have travelled far enough down to show and to swing. They have to be dissolved off and moved back up. Most sets survive two or three of those moves before the hair is spent.

Clip-in extensions use the same wefts with hardware instead of glue and come out nightly. Keratin bonds fuse to small sections and hold three to four months, at the cost of a bulkier lump you can feel through fine hair. Sew-in wefts need braids underneath and suit denser, coarser hair. Halo extensions attach to nothing and give up the ability to wear your hair up.

Fine and medium hair gains most, since nothing else hides this well on a thin head of hair. Length you can sleep in, swim in and wash on a normal schedule is exactly what this method delivers. Very oily scalps struggle, because sebum reaching a tab loosens it early. Pass if you cannot commit to a salon appointment every six to eight weeks, and pass if you use oil or a heavy silicone serum daily, since both dissolve adhesive on contact.

Wait 24 to 48 hours after fitting before the first wash so the adhesive cures fully. Shampoo at the roots with a gentle sulfate free formula and keep conditioner from the ears down, as anything rich near a tab cuts its hold to days. Dry the tabs completely, since damp adhesive slips. Send the removal back to whoever fitted it, because the solvent has to break the bond before anything moves. Pulling a tab out dry takes your own hair with it.
