Opera

Opera covers 28 to 36 inches, 71 to 91 centimeters, finishing at the sternum or a little below. It is the first band long enough to clear the fullest part of the chest. The chain hangs free in a straight line instead of resting on fabric and bending outward.

Conversion is the main reason for the length. Doubled, a 32 inch strand becomes two rows at about 16 inches and works as a choker. Knotted once at chest height it loses roughly 3 inches and gains a 1920s line. Worn straight over a plain column dress it draws a single vertical stroke that makes the whole outfit read taller.

Metal costs by weight, so a 32 inch chain uses close to twice the gold of a 16 inch one at the same gauge and prices accordingly. The clasp is the second issue. On a long chain it migrates round to the front within an hour of movement. Either buy one you are happy to see, or choose a strand that slips over your head with no clasp at all.

Try the doubling before you buy, because not every long strand halves cleanly. Fold the chain in two and confirm the doubled loop still passes over your head. A 28 inch strand becomes 14 inches folded and will not go on. Material changes the result as well. A knotted pearl rope drapes as a soft curve. In contrast, a fine cable chain folds into two lines that slide apart through the evening. Wear concentrates at the midpoint, the single spot that takes the fold each time, so vary where you fold it and the chain lasts longer.
