Medium Hoop

Medium covers 1.1 to 2 inches, about 28 to 50 millimeters. A US quarter measures 24 millimeters, so even the smallest medium hoop is wider than that. The top of the band reaches roughly halfway down the side of the face. This is the size people picture when they say gold hoops.

At 28 millimeters and above the ring hangs far enough below the lobe to swing, and swing is what makes the earring feel alive. It is also where weight starts to matter, and diameter tells you nothing about it. A hollow tube hoop at 40 millimeters can weigh 2 grams while a solid one of identical size weighs 6. After eight hours you will know which you bought. Under about 3 grams per ear stays comfortable all day.

The compromise is practical. Medium hoops move enough to be noticed and stay small enough to fit under a coat collar, past a seat belt and against a phone. They catch hair, though, especially with a hinged closure whose seam sits on the outer curve. The larger circle is also bent out of round more easily if you sleep in them or drop them.

Weigh a pair before you commit, since listings quote diameter and stay silent about mass. A single earring under 3 grams on a kitchen scale predicts all day comfort better than any photograph. Held against a small hoop, medium buys visible movement and gives up snag resistance. Hair, scarves and phone screens all find a 40 millimeter ring that a 20 millimeter one slips past. Look at where the hinge seam sits too, because a seam on the outer curve catches hair and springs open first.
