Coverage

Medium Coverage

Evens most discoloration in one layer while skin still reads as skin.

Also called: buildable coverage, natural coverage

The basics

What to know about medium coverage

Medium coverage holds enough pigment to erase most everyday unevenness in a single pass while letting a little texture through. That surviving texture is what keeps it looking like skin rather than a surface. Redness, mild sun damage and the shadow around the nose go in one layer. Deeper pigmentation and under-eye circles usually want a second pass or a separate concealer over the top.

Buildable describes how the formula takes that second pass. A really buildable base tolerates another thin layer without lifting or dragging the first. You can raise coverage only where it is needed and leave the rest alone. Work from the center of the face outward, where most discoloration sits, and let the product thin naturally toward the hairline and jaw. Two thin layers wear far better than one heavy one, because a thick film cracks around the nose and smile lines by afternoon.

Precision in shade matching starts to matter at this level. Test along the jaw in daylight rather than on the wrist, since wrist skin runs a different tone from the face. Check the match again after 20 minutes in case the formula oxidizes darker. Undertone counts as much as depth: a shade that matches in depth but runs too pink or too yellow shows as a mask at the edges. The compromise is real but small, which is why most people settle in this band for daily wear.

Best for

When it works well

  • Everyday foundation lands here, because one layer handles normal unevenness without a routine built around it.
  • Mixed coverage needs suit it, as you can build over the center of the face and leave the perimeter light.
  • Office and daylight settings favor this band, since it corrects color without announcing itself beside a window.
  • Anyone who dislikes reapplying gains, because a moderate film lasts a day without cracking around the nose.
